I AM NEW TO THIS GROUP. I HAVE HAD THE ILLNESS FOR 12 YEARS AND

HAD THORASIC SURGERY LAST YEAR. WHILE I WAS IN THE HOSPITAL FOR A

TOTAL OF 29 DAYS THEY FOUND A FUNGUS GROWING IN MY LUNGS FROM

ASPIRATED FOOD OVER THE YEARS CALLED A-TYPICAL TB NOT CATCHING.

THE TREATMENT IS MASSIVE DOSES OF ANTIBODICS IV AND ORAL OVER A 2

YEAR PERIOD. THE COUGHING NO LONGER IS A PROBLEM THANKS TO

ANTIBODICS AND HEAVY ASTHMA MEDICATIONS. THE SURGERY HELPED THE

SWALLOWING BUT THERE ARE STILL FOODS I CAN NOT EAT WITHOUT PAIN.

THOSE WHO HAVE A COUGH MAY GET BLOWN OFF BY THEIR PRIMARY DR AS I

DID AND NEED TO SEE A PULMONARY DR. HAS ANYONE ELSE HAD THIS A-

TYPICAL TB AS A RESULT OF ACHALASIA?

Jan, I use to have that coughing really bad. I

think what is happening is food or liquids

getting into the lungs. Have you talked to your

doctor about this? I finally ended up with

pneumonia. You really should talk to your doctor

about it if you haven't.

In the meantime sleep elevated. Raise the head

of your bed, stack pillows, or get an adjustable

bed, whatever you can do to stop getting this

stuff in your lungs at night while you sleep.

Jan - I also have the coughing problem. I make sure to drink a lot of water after the last thing I eat each day & then I go 2-3 hours minimum without food before going to bed. I also sleep with a "husband pillow" (the kind with "arms") and if it gets really bad, I leave both my husband's in bed & sleep on the couch. This is helping me a lot.

I only recently developed the coughing....about a month ago. It is scary - I have woken up feeling like I was drowning, but I don't think I have aspirated anything yet.

I have an appointment to see a surgeon March 10 & he said that if I opt for the surgery, I would be able to have it in April!

Cindi in PA

PS - the surgeon is in Hershey....he has a 93% success rate & is the head of laproscopic surgery there....I've been reading all of your things with interest writing down many notes of questions to ask him. If I don't feel satisfied with him after the consult, I will look to go to NY).

I too have coughing, in fact the coughing is how I became aware of my situation. I find If I am eating and start feeling that tickle in my throat then I stop eating. It usually means my esophagus is full and start to fill over. I also avoid any food at night for about 3 hours before bed. I find jumping up and down helps force food down and drinking a warm drink before bed helps too.

I also sleep on the couch if I start to cough because the couch has big puffy arms that prop me up. I stop coughing when sleeping on an incline.

Before I had a Nissen fundoplication for GERD, I saw a ENT for violent coughing spells that occurred day and night. They took a video scope of my vocal cords and said the damage they saw was consistent with acid reflux damage. Not saying that's what you've got, but it might be worth asking about.

a, coughing can be and probably is related

to your Achalasia. Aspiration pneumonia is

one of the things we have been warned about

and I am surprised your GI does not know that.

Has he done any x-rays or testing for lung

infections?

I also had that awful day time cough, wheezing

or rattle and ended up spending several days in

the hospital with pneumonia.

Another time I had breathing problems so bad

that I was put on a nebulizer with albuterol

inhalation and continued to have breathing

treatments for several months. I was diagnosed

with Emphysema. Later I took some antibiotics

for another problem and have not had a breathing

treatment since. That was 8 months ago. Did the antibiotics clear up a lung infection as well? I don't know but when I mentioned this recently to my GI, he said if I ever felt the need for breathing treatments again he'd like to see me try a round

of antibiotics first.

Please mention these things to the ENT when

you see him and ask him to read up on Achalasia

if he is not familiar with it. Your coughing may

be something else altogether, but I'd bet it is

caused from aspiration.

Good luck and let us know what you find out.

I found the thread on coughing, but can't figure out how to get to

the beginning of it!

I'm interested because, if I'm getting the gist of the thread, I have

the coughing problem, and it's not mainly at night or while lying

down, which I understand is the usual kind of coughing/choking for A

people. I get that tickle during the day, most often after the

evening meal, and once I start coughing, I cough violently for hours,

throwing up and all. It's exhausting! And if it happens when I'm

out, or doing anything, I have to leave and go home. I can't breathe

well, and after awhile, my breathing has a kind of rattle in the

throat.

I've had endoscopies and an EUS, and there is no explanation. My

gastro guy is sending me to an ENT, and if he can't figure anything

out, he says he'll try another dilatation. But I'm not having

serious trouble actually swallowing, so I hate to go through the

risks involved with that.

Has anyone found a reason, or a solution, for this day-time, violent

coughing? Does it seem common enough that it is, indeed, related to

the achalasia?

a,

I don’t regurgitate much any more

since having surgery, but on rare occasion, I’ll end up regurgitating if

I’m not careful to wash my food down with water. (Sometimes it’s

just easier to gurge it back up than it is to push it

through if my E is really full.) I just need to remember to drink plenty of

water to wash the food through…otherwise it won’t go down.

When I do regurgitate, it seems to cause

me to aspirate and I find myself coughing for hours until I cough it all up.

Hope this helps, and hope you find some

relief!

I find that if I eat a little too much then I can start coughing. I think the food is filling my esophagus and I don't feel it, but it topping over and causing aspiration.

The only thing I found to help was smaller meals more frequently.

a, thanks for the additional information

about the x-rays. I too hope the ENT will

find something. I will be following with interest

since your symptoms were so much like mine. My

coughing stopped after the treatment for

pneumonia but the difficulty in breathing

continued until after my antibiotics. Of course

it could still be the emphysema, but I doubt it

and so does my GI.

I should be having a followup CT on my lungs

as a part of a lung study program. I will be

interested to see what they find this time.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Hugs,

Maggie

My GI is actually pretty good with achalasia, and has done chest x-

rays, which is why it's so confusing. He did an EGD and found some

kind of kink in my esophagus by the LES, and found that my food

wasn't digesting - still in my stomach after 14 hours. So they did

this gastric emptying test - nothing conclusive, and an EGD with EUS

(ultrasound) to rule out a tumor causing the kink.

It helps to know others with A have this problem, though, since what

I've read and been told indicates that coughing at night while lying

down is common, but not this. I too feel like it's aspiration, or

something along that line, but the chest x-ray was clear. Maybe the

ENT guy will find something.

Thanks!

Interesting question. I've always - since early childhood when my brother did not want to share a bedroom with me because of it - had to regularly clear my throat. It was always discounted as a sinus issue, especially as I lived with my Dad - an enthusiastic smoker.

It's the pest from the west again, sorry..!!

I have been having a bit of bother with the above of recent. It happens quite

suddenly like the preverbial frog in throat where my throat goes dry or into

spasm , and even a drink of water can't help sometimes and got to stage am

gagging and feel might be sick.

Also been having a bit of bother at night with reflux, which try get rid of by

swallowing and drinking water, and sets off coughing bout. it sometimes help to

change sleeping position. My husband has said do snore, I know I sleep with

mouth open, and have had tonsils out. I never wake up feeling refreshed and

don't if have sleep apnea, wouldn't say overweight but on upper limit of BMI

according to Wii fit.

I gets quite embarrasing when speaking to people , that you have to break

conversation to cough and go into such a fit sometimes that your eyes start to

water and become wheezey, this also hapens when get giggles and/or laughing fit.

Have had thyroid scan about 4 months ago, which showed slight swelling on right

and nothing on left and a few nodules. I havea visible nodule right under the

skin to right of neck which is pea sized and has grown since had my first child

almost 8 years ago, and this is when it first appeared and was dismissed as spot

under skin, it is painful to touch, and have slight swelling about where adam's

apple area is ( don't know term for ladies!!)..never feel comfortable in throat

area any more, always feel as though got slight cold coming on and voice tends

to get hoarse ( know this is hypo symptom ). I have mentioned to doc in past and

lokked over, but to be honest it's getting a nuisance..Don't know if it is worth

mentioning to doc or just to keep quiet about it until gets really bad..??

Would value some suggestions as to what to do.

Thanks again

Jill

Hi ,

That's interesting about the BP meds - are you talking about beta blocker? - I seem to have a real problem with my pulse rate too, but my BP is very low (and still falling from sitting to standing, in spite of doubling my adrenal Dynamite). I have a resting pulse rate between 80-100 (had that for the past 10 years, even b4 thyroid meds) and the slightest exertion, and it shoots up (but only my pulse, not my BP).

- just one example .... I hoovered the stairs yesterday, which is hardly a 'work-out', and when I had finished those 14 steps, I could feel my heart jumping out of my chest.... I counted the pulse, and it was 150....

Other than the inability to physically exert myself, I feel great (on 2 grains Armour). I can only think that I am either hopelessly unfit (though I walk my dog for at least 1 hour every day without fail), or something is amiss.

Hi Jill

It's not just you - I have had a persistant cough for years - also catching me

out when talking on the phone or face to face. Sometimes I would go into a sort

of coughing spasm to the point of being sick and causing burst blood vessels in

and around my eyes and throat - horrid and very disruptive at work. In fact

this was the main driver alongside the ever present fatigue that drove me to

find other explainations and then treatment for my symptoms.

I have to say that now I have started and then increased the Armour the cough

has almost gone - it just happens occasionally instead of lots of times a day.

Surprise surprise the dismissive chest consultant simply stated that it was an

irritable airway and I would cough until it stopped being irritable. Not very

helpful when it is ruining a career and increasing the fatigue - basically

affecting allareas of my life.

Take care

Sally

Is this normal? I try to get him to slow down and relax but he just does not get
