Fortunately or unfortunately I read the book The Thyroid Solution. It says we get so much iodine through salt and other sources that taking iodine as supplement will easily give us thyroditis. So past two days I have been worrying. Now i am thinking to cut down my Lugol's and Potassium Iodide to two times per week rather than daily. Ditto with selenium too. This book has scared me. I need comments of others on this. Thanks.------

They are wrong. I have been looking at new articles stating that there is NOT enough iodine in our food and salt. Why don't you get a loading test done to know for sure where you are - or even a spot urine test.

Ratan,

I

would be curious about credentials, clinical experience, and training that the

author of this book has. I’m sure that you know from your training that

the allopathic medical profession is problematic in that they are good at

diagnosis but relatively inert as regards actually fixing anything. If the

author is an M.D., I would question anything and everything that the author has

to say.

How

does this information correspond to what Abrams, and Brownstein have to say?

Long

before I entered the practice of naturopathy, it was a basic axiom in

supplementation, that water-soluble supplemental substances are generally not

problematic, because the excess is eliminated. From what I can remember of what

I was taught in naturopathic training was that inordinate amounts of a specific

substance MAY over a period of time be problematic. Part of the reason that I

am monitoring the iodine site, is that what they are doing with potassium

iodide etc. is different from the dosage information and protocols that I’m

familiar with. That does not make them wrong, only different. From what I

understand of most of the folks here, they are having specific problems with

cancer or precancerous conditions; have been exposed to toxins that affect

their thyroid, etc. and therefore would have more need for thyroid substance

for remediation, or that they may have problems in assimilation of the

supplement. As previously stated, I am NOT an expert in this particular aspect,

but I have yet in two years of study to find a situation in which I have

specific evidence that the thyroid was damaged by over supplementation of

product. That does not mean that you should ingest a full bottle of Iodoral a

day, but reasonable amounts (I believe is taking 100 mg a day) should

not be a problem. I personally take between 37.5mg and 50 mg per day with a natural

thyroid substance support, and also the cofactors commonly associated with

thyroid support. When I take too much, I simply can’t sleep. Also, and

this is a basic principle of naturopathy, overdosing of any naturopathic

product can result in loose stool, or diarrhea.

If

my memory serves me correctly, you are “offshore” (is it India?).

They may not have the same jargon over there as we do, but the allopathic

medical community has come up with an RDA (recommended daily amounts) which we

in the naturopathic community call Really Dumb Amounts. What I always tell

clients, is that what I tell them MUST make sense, and common sense to them,

and that it is almost always true that any competent practitioner should be

telling you the same things that I am. That should be true of any of the

reading that I or any of my clients do. I don’t believe that your

book passes that test.

And I don't know about you, but I can tell you that my husband and I

only occasionally use the salt shaker -- but my children NEVER touch it.

I don't think folks are getting iodine from their salt anymore.

A lot has to do with the " Low Salt " diets too. Doctors promote that for

hypertension when you NEED sodium to help hypertension - just not the

refined junk. The unrefined has over 80 minerals in it.

I know. It is possible that Sodium is not the culprit to push our blood pressure by itself. If balanced with Potassium the Sodium may not be harmful at all. The ratio supposedly has to be 2 to 1 with Sodium the twice one. In the sea over 60 minerals are found including Sodium. The act of humans has isolated the white Sodium Chloride. The real culprit therefore is the human tinkering. ------------

I think for healthy functioning of kidneys we need salt. If it is iodized salt then we will have too much of iodine if we top up with iodine as supplement. What I do is that I stop white salt for five days if my blood pressure goes up. The b.p. then comes down. Then and daily I take Potassium chloride and Sodium chloride together. On this balancing, my b.p. stays at 120/80 without any medicine. For iodine and selenium I have gone on alternate day regimen for iodine and once or twice a week for selenium.--------

None. Only loose argument that since iodized salt started there is increase in thyroditis in USA. But no data on this front too.---------

Dr. Abraham is an endocrinologist that specialized in women's health. He was a professor I believe at one of the CA universities for a while as well. Dr. Brownstein is a board certified family practice MD. He has since gone on to learn about holistic medicine and that is the form he practices. You can learn more about him on www.drbrownstein.com or www.centerforholisticmedicine.com as well as buy his books on the first website. Dr. Abraham (not Abrams) has his writings on his website on www.optimox.com . You can also view Dr. Brownstein's video seminars on the Vit C Foundation Website.

Dr. Abraham is an endocrinologist that specialized in women's

health. He was a professor I believe at one of the CA universities for a while

as well. Dr. Brownstein is a board certified family practice MD. He

has since gone on to learn about holistic medicine and that is the form he

practices. You can learn more about him on www.drbrownstein.com or www.centerforholisticmedicine.com

as well as buy his books on the first website. Dr. Abraham (not Abrams)

has his writings on his website on www.optimox.com

.. You can also view Dr. Brownstein's video seminars on the Vit C

Foundation Website.

Yes, the author is an M.D.

I think you are right.

I am curious about Abram and Brownstein. What are their qualifications and

have they written a book. Pardon my ignorance.

I forgot to mention that Dr. Abraham's entire work can be purchased from Optimox for $25 - it is called "The Original Internist - Special Edition". It is a hard copy compilation of all the research articles that are listed on the www.optimox.com website. I believe there may even be more. I have a copy but have yet to read it. I have read several of the individual articles. I need to clone myself to get all the reading I want to do done. I have shelves of books! Even that Thyroid book mentioned by Rattan.
