- I'm fine, but something is running in the background all the time and I have

to wait ages for messages and web sites to open. It is driving me up the wall. It's

like the AVG virus checker is running all the time and I need to do something

about it. It is supposed to update at 11.30p.m. but it seems to be running when

I switch on and is still running all day. Can anybody help with ideas.

Did I see a post where you mentioned you were having

problems seeing

the puter windows? Are you ok?

Sheila my friend has been having the same trouble. She is on Virgin Media and I wonder if it could be an ISP problem.

It was only a couple of week ends ago that I was having problems with things running slow. It said their was a problem in the CM20 area but I was in the CM19 area. I think they probably made a mistake. After a few days it was over again.

Go here, do the test to see how fast your broadband is working.

At the moment mine is 1886, but when it was at its worst it was down to 29.

I had that trouble but mine seemed related to the Firefox browser.

If you go into your task manager you can see what is running in the

background (if it isn't your isp.)

Hope you sort it out soon hon

Hi Sheila,

In the bottom right hand corner of your screen on the bottom menu bar

there are icons, hover the mouse pointer over them and if they are

things like your printer, MSN, etc. right click and exit them. (They

will re-set when you turn off your computer and turn it on the next

day).

If it is AVG you can halt it and start from the same point later on.

Again right click and select exit/stop, you will get a menu asking if

you really want to quit, click yes and it will close down.

(Don't forget that as well as updating, AVG will run a check on all

your files and systems once a day.)

Remember to re-start the AVG virus checker though, as you might leave

yourself open to Trojans, there seem to be a lot about at the moment.

My copy of AVG stopped updating itself recently so last week I had to

download it again and reinstall it.

OK

- Now I'm gonna show how computer literate I am… Where do I find my task

manager? If you mean open my AVG to see if anything is running, I have, but

there is nothing there, everything looks fine and dandy - updates done, next

scheduled task is 11.30p.m. What now….

press ctr and alt and delete at the same time and it will bring up a

box giving you the software list that you are running. If anything

iffy is in the list you have the choice to 'end task' by highlighting

it and pushing end task button, there are other tabs on the top of

that box you can go into to see what you have got running in the

background but that is a bit techy lol.
