Hi, I am glad that you are learning how to get better as I am too. It can be challenging too!

I asked what books to learn more. She suggested anything by Dr. Brownstein. I bought all of his books, and am educating myself.

With the education, came many different supplements that I either have or are coming to me.

I am giving up on my Nurse Practioner or other traditional person to help me with this. They don't get it. ( drink more Mountain Dew!- does he want you to stay ill?) Knowledge is powerful. I am now looking for a Doc of NP that can help me from here locally. If not then 1 in CA that does understand this stuff. I have been sick for 25 years.

It is great that you did an iodine loading test and have figured out what was causing it.

Now to reverse everything....

It did not take over night to get sick. So it takes awhile to feel better. A step at a time!

Hugs,

I need some encouragement -sorry this is so long

Hi all,I am on day 9 of supplementing with 25mg Iodoral. The results of myloading test are not back yet. I have had fibro/chronic fatigue forten years, and have recently found the source of fibro pain to be msgand aspartame. So I have eliminated those from my diet and thankfully, now stay pain free. This fatigue and muscle weakness is gettingdiscouraging, though. Until I eliminated Mountain Dew (yeah, bromine!)from my diet two months ago, I didn't realize just how fatigued I am.It's getting so bad that I don't want to get out of bed at all, and Ihave no real excitement about doing anything. My dear husband ishanging in there marvelously, and is also hopeful that we have foundthe answer or partial answer in iodine supplementation. (found throughthe fibromyalgia research group website.)I figure I am going through bromine detox at this point which is maybewhy I feel even more fatigued, weak,

and achy. (kinda depressed too) Iam supplementing with Vit. C, Mg, sea salt loading, selenium, multivitamin too. Maybe I need to increase the sea salt, as I have onlyused 1/8 to 1/4 tsp a day. I just read today's post, through thebreast cancer choices link, about 1/2 tsp in a small glass of waterfollowed by more plain water, etc. My primary care physician has no other ideas. Says I am nothypothyroid based upon my TSH (yeah, I know-all that proves is mypituitary gland is working) and that there is no cure or treatment forchronic fatigue. He says I should just enjoy my two or three MountainDews a day and the energy that comes with it. I know that I can't givein to that. I have taken my basal temp and I am around 97, but sincethe iodine supplementation I am betting it's higher as I am warmer. What should I do at this point. Just keep hanging in there? Othersuggestions. Thanks so much to

everyone for posting their ideas onsalt loading. I have tried several, just haven't decided which Iprefer yet. :) I've been on a low salt diet for so many decades that Ithink the real problem is that I am not used to salt!

Thanks, . I know you're right. One step at a time. Just gotta get

my head on straight!! :) and keep it there. And you are right about

giving up on the tradional medicine model for helping us.

I did buy the book on salt by Dr. Brownstein as well as his book on

Iodine. I have been thinking of getting the other ones too.

Again thanks, I'll hang in there.

I just got another book on Hypothryoidism that was recommend; Hypothryoidism Type 2 by Mark Starr MD at Amazon.com

My question was answered in that book about the swollen tongue.... It is a sign of hypothroidism! So I am still hypo..

If you need to talk, write me anytime.

I too have had a sore throat, not in the tonsil area, more down the

middle. I'll go for a week at a time with a sore throat, then a few

weeks without. I didn't know that could be a thyroid symptom. The

doctor thinks it is just part of the chronic fatigue syndrome. I also

have unexplained fevers off and on, but almost never above 99, since I

run so low normally. I also never like anything snug around my neck. I

read on some site tonight that is a thyroid symptom. But maybe my

thyroid will get " well " with the iodine. I will have a consultation

with Dr. Flechas at some point.

thanks ladies for the encouragement. Should I stay on 25mg of iodoral

for now?

I also like Mark Starr's book Hypothyroidism Type II

Did the docs run free T3 or free T4. Some people are subclinical

meaning they have all the symptoms but it is not found on a lab

sheet. Temps are a good way to measure. Perhaps the iodine will

clear hypo symptoms. Hang in there. You are on the right path.

I have always thought that Fibro/CFS would respond to Armour, cortef for adrenals, and enough iodine. once you get enough iodine your TSH might go up, and then you will be allowed thyroid meds!

, I will look for that book and the other that was recommended at

the library this week. The doctor didn't feel T4 or T3 were necessary.

:( I will take my temp again this week and see if I am doing any

better. I know that my hands and feet are not so cold anymore and I

don't need three blankets, and socks in bed anymore. I'm down to just

socks and sometimes one blanket. Guess that is progress!

Thanks again

I don't know yet. I just know we paid the loading test fee and have a

free consult by phone coming. The loading test through his lab was

about $30 higher than the other lab so that is where the consult comes

in. But I'm sure a consult is generally much higher than $30 for any

specialist. I'll let you know how this goes when I find out.

Tonight I'm up with congestion in my throat and lung pain. I had lung

pain with wheezing a few nights ago so I assume it's a detox thing. No

wheezing tonight, it just hurts to breathe in. At least out is fine

and that's usually when you feel asthma anyway. Ah well. If it's

detox, it is worth the misery.

I've been researching natural cat food, of all things. Getting into

holistic health topics for yourself kinda spills over to the whole

family. My cats are considered " senior " and one is on pain medicine for

her hips. As I have been thinking about my pain being relieved by no

aspartate and glutamate, well it got me thinking about her cat food.

What can I say. .....

Thanks to everyone,

Vicki

This fatigue and muscle weakness is gettingdiscouraging, though.

I have been going through the same thing and I've only been on 1 drop of lugol's (approx. 6 mg of iodine). The muscle weakness and fatigue was so awful that I couldn't do my usual exercise. My experiment lasted 27 days and then yesterday, I skipped the iodine and by mid-morning, felt a dramatic difference in my energy level. I was actually able to exercise a bit. I may stay off this entirely until I see Dr. Linchitz. Dr. B repeatedly says that there is no one ideal dose for everyone and while fatigue etc can be caused by detox, the symptoms are also identical to going hypo. Maybe some of us need less. And I think you are correct, going slow is certainly an option. He recommends this in his book for those who may be sensitive to any supplements. I have Hashi's and I'm sure that makes a difference. In any event, I believe in iodine supplementation because in a matter of days, my breasts were softer -- but I cannot tolerate this horrid fatigue and muscle weakness. I simply could not function. Therefore, I think some guidance by an iodine experienced professional may be necessary for those of us who are not getting the great results right off the bat that others are. I wish Iodoral came in smaller doses -- 1/2 Iodoral is equal to what I am taking with Lugol's but I would like to try half that amount. Unfortunately, I can't split a drop of Lugol's. One of the Iodine docs in the Iodine group starts people on the equivalent of half a drop of Lugol's and then works upward depending upon symptoms, side-effects. Dr. West, for example, starts with 3 mg. I have always taken large doses of vitamin C and magnesium -- we use Celtic salt although I am not one to add salt to food -- I like spicy, not salty. But I did add it to my food and water -- still, bone crushing fatigue and muscle weakness continued. Dr. B says in the Q & A section of his book that there is no one ideal dose -- it must be individualized. I also believe that body weight must play a role in finding the ideal dose especially since we are talking about "whole body" suffienciency. Anyway, good luck and keep us posted. PS: It occurs to me that there must be iodine in Armour and maybe Cytomel -- anyone have info on that??Gas prices getting you down? Search AOL Autos for fuel-efficient used cars.

Vicki,

My holistic vet put my cat on Glyco-Flex II soft chews by Vetri-Science.

He is 10 years old and was getting very lethargic and hardly wanted to

move. The soft chews really have helped him and now he moves around

alot more. I think he was in alot of pain. He is not on any other

meds, just the chews and some senior vits. I kept him on the higher

starting dose as when I lowered to the maintenance dose he started to go

downhill. Deb

, I have problems with chronic sore throat. I've been on the

Iodoral for over a month now, and wondered if it was a detox symptom,

but I skipped it for a couple days and *still* had a sore, swollen

throat (not to mention HORRIBLE lethargy). I backed down from 50mg to

25mg just in case, but it's not made a difference to the throat. So

maybe it's just a hypo symptom for me, I don't know.

Do you have EBV/Mono? Not all symptoms are a result of

hypothyroidism. Might want to get a CBC done to confirm. Savvy

I had Mono in 1998, can it " flare up " again? I've not really studied

Mono, so I don't know these things, I've been more focused on getting

my thyroid function up (not on any meds for anything yet). I've had a

swollen neck since April (goiter?), I am 9 months postpartum.

I will check into that, though. I was just treated with antibiotics

in April for throat probs, so I'm not sure the doc won't just throw

more abx at me.

I suggest you try Prolamine Iodine from Standard Process. It is

basically the same formula as Iodoral, only smaller amount of iodine

(3mg per tablet). And for all the people who are asking about going

slow...I think that is fine, especially if you are Hashi's or adrenal

depleted. I am both Hashi's (on Armour) and adrenal depleted and have

taken one year to work up from 3.1mg (1 prolamine tablet) to 12.5mg (4

prolamine tablets). I have just gone very gradually along with my

adrenal support program. I have felt some fatigue, aches, detox along

the way, but it is manageable since I am going so slow. Also taking

VitC, Mag, sometimes salt. Not everyone can start at 50mg, or 25mg, or

even 12.5mg!

Oh, by the way, Standard Process supplements can be had from a local

chiropractor, maybe an acupuncturist (that's where I get mine), and I

think there is also an online retail source. The company sells only to

practitioners. And if you consider taking any of their other

supplements, be sure to check ingredients if you are gluten or casein

sensitive...they include wheat germ and dairy whey in many of their

supplements (but not in the Prolamine).

Wow! You are all a wealth of information! After reading all your posts

and ideas, I am thinking that I will take my temp 3 times today and

for the next week to see if I am adrenal fatigued. I did take my basal

temp this morning and it is a full half degree higher than before the

Iodoral. If that continues then I certainly have some thyroid

improvement as I had hoped.

I am skipping the Iodoral today to see if the fatigue and weakness

reduce.Maybe even just give myself a break from the detoxing. And I

will consider taking less than the 25mg that I have been taking until

I talk to Dr. Flechas.

I am also going to increase my vit. C to 5000 this week to help with

detox symptoms. My throat is better today, but lungs still hurt. :( At

least we all know I'm not going to head for the Mountain Dew to " help "

myself.

Also, thanks for the info on chocolate and bromide. Did I understand

correctly that only the organic chocolate is not sprayed with the

bromide? thank you too for the idea for my kitty who has sore hips.

I'm still mulling over that whole situation. I guess to some extent I

can only change so many things at one time in my life and I may have

to study the kitty issue a little longer to see what is best.

I do feel comforted and encouraged this morning. Thanks to all of you

and of course, to God!

Blessings-

the problem is the dose. if you are very iodine deficient then taking too little will be a big prob. just like taking too little Armour!!!!! I thought iodine docs generally start ppl on 50mg.

In any event, I believe in iodine supplementation because in a matter of days, my breasts were softer -- but I cannot tolerate this horrid fatigue andmuscle weakness. Dr. B says in the Q & A section of his book that there is no one ideal dose -- it must be individualzed. I also believe that body weight must play a role in finding the ideal dose especially since we are talking about "whole body" suffienciency. Anyway, good luck and keep us posted. PS: It occurs to me that there must be iodine in Armour and maybe Cytomel -- anyone have info on that??

FYI.. Natures's Own makes a wide variety of breads from white to

wheat (we like the honey wheat) that DOES NOT contain bromide. It is

even stated on every bag. We can get this bread at almost every

grocery store here and we don't have to make special trips. Although

the honey wheat is very popular and sometimes sells out. They also

make a " light honey wheat " (low cal) that is only 40 calories per

slice and actually tastes like bread. I usually use that when I want

a sandwich. It sells out frequently too.

You may want to check out the website of Dr. Hoffman and/or contact him via email at his website. He also has a popular radio show as well. I went to see him once and he mentioned that sometimes those with Hashis have problems with gluten and dairy and that omitting those items from the diet will often result in a lowering or normalizing of thyroid antibodies. He does not advocate a one size fits all approach to diet and in fact, for autoimmune issues, he recommends a hunter-gather pre-neolithic diet -- ie organic animal protein, veggies, nuts, small amounts of fruit. No dairy, no grains, no sugar. But he advocates entirely different dietary regimes for others. So it's never a one size fits all approach and I think that makes the most sense. I know vegetarians that feel healthy, but such a diet nearly killed me. Little did I know that my veggie diet loaded with soy, cruciferous veggies and other potent thyroid disrupters was aggravating my then-undiagnosed hypothyroidism. Dr. Hoffman himself used to be a vegetarian when he was younger but now incorporates more animal protein in his diet. Anyway, cutting wheat especially and all gluten grains in general seems to help hypothyroids lose weight.

I am not sure that this is the best option either (although they make an organic form that would be better). Look at the ingredient list of the Honey Wheat. The enriched flour means that they have stripped it clean of the fibrous shell where the nutrients are and put back synthetic vitamins. It is probably GMO wheat which means the gluten content is VERY high which is hard on your body. This is not a whole wheat product. Soybean oil is not great for you with a thyroid issue either. I would pass on this one.

UNBLEACHED ENRICHED FLOUR (WHEAT FLOUR, MALTED BARLEY FLOUR, NIACIN, REDUCED IRON, THIAMIN MONONITRATE, RIBOFLAVIN, FOLIC ACID) WATER HONEY HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP WHOLE WHEAT FLOUR RYE FLOUR WHEAT BRAN YEAST CONTAINS 2% OR LESS OF EACH OF THE FOLLOWING: WHEAT GLUTEN SALT SOYBEAN OIL VINEGAR CULTURED WHEAT FLOUR DOUGH CONDITIONERS (CONTAINS ONE OR MORE OF THE FOLLOWING: SODIUM STEAROYL LACTYLATE, CALCIUM STEAROYL-2-LACTYLATE, MONOGLYCERIDES AND/OR DIGLYCERIDES, CALCIUM PEROXIDE, CALCIUM IODATE, DATEM, ETHOXYLATED MONO- AND DIGLYCERIDES) YEAST FOOD (AMMONIUM SULFATE) MONOCALCIUM PHOSPHATE CALCIUM SULFATE ENZYMES SOY FLOUR SOY LECITHIN
