I remember some saying it is a detox thing, to take the toxins

out of the body. Maybe that has kicked in some. I would just chart it and watch

further cycles.

perimenopause can start early even before age 40 for some women..but maybe you just had one off cycle..were you under some extra stress that month?A strange thing happened. When I started iodine over a year agomy cycles came twice monthly with

Well, even without iodine at 43, you're pretty well starting perimenopause and irregular periods are part of that whole process for many. I was regular as clockwork till age 50 and now I'm all over the board. I have a friend who has been irregular (surprise!) since she turned 41. She used to get really ticked off at me.

It's interesting that every time I increase my iodine level, I have a period but I'm now at an age where I keep thinking it's my last one because I'll go months between.

My guess is that you have a couple things happening. Iodine is helping regulate some aspects but perimenopause may also be at play. I started it then stopped it because it gave me headaches.I haven't had sex hormones tested in a year though,so I am due for that. But isn't it unusual for my period to cometwo weeks after it already came?-AOn Sep 29, 2009, at 8:19 AM, Gracia wrote:do you use progesterone cream? that might help.graciaAlison Trotta-Marshall wrote:> >> I don't know.>> Generally it is a stressful time.> But I don't sit home crying about it.> -A> On Sep 28, 2009, at 4:19 PM, dawn volz wrote:>>>>> perimenopause can start early even before age 40 for some women..but >> maybe you just had one of f cycle..were you under some extra stress >> that month?>>

,

If you have the time, could you (or someone else) please explain to me how

iodine affects the sex hormones? This is one part I don't understand at all and

am really interested in. I am pretty sure it was affecting mine as my periods

also got strange on Iodoral and I could no longer tolerate progesterone although

I'd been using it for years.

I have heard iodine makes progesterone levels go higher, but I don't understand

how.

Does it also affect estrogen someohow?

Thank you,

Kathleen

No it is not unususal for your period to come two weeks after the last one. Some women have three a month and some have none for three or more months and sometimes the body has to re-set for whatever reason.

Read about perimenopause. It's easy. Do a search. You'll find gobs of information about it. At 43, your body is starting to change for the next phase. Perimenopause can last 12 or more years. During that time your periods may come early, come late, not come for months or be like clockwork. Hi Kathleen,

I'm sorry but I don't know or understand enough about how iodine affects sex hormones to answer your question. I wish I did.

This I know, my periods resumed after six months of none when I increased my idodine levels to 50. Each time I've increased the amount of Iodoral I'm taking, I've ended up having an 'unexpected' period within a couple weeks. Unexpected because I'm at that point where each one may be the last one. Also, the nature of my periods have changed with things flowing more freely and easily. I have fewer PMS symptoms and fewer cramps and I feel (though I don't know) that it is more about detoxing through that pathway.

Prior to increasing my Iodoral and for all of my life, periods were very painful and were accompanied with fevers of 101 degrees and severe cramps, nausea, and diahrrea. Now they are a bit uncomfortable but nothing compared to what they were.

I hope someone else here will be able to answer your question because it is a very good one and I am most interested in the answer. I guess I was operating with the information, after yearsof paying alternative health practitioners, that the goal wasalways to move my periods from twice a month to once a month, and keep them at every 28 days.At that point, I would be closer to healthy and "normal"than I had ever been before.I wasn't realizing that as you get older, perimenopause sets inchanging things up a bit.And I can't use my mother as a guide because she hada Hysterectomy at my age.Your description though of the body re-setting itself feels right to me. I have only been on 50 mg of iodoralfor a few months, every other day.And like you, it has slowly taken away much of my PMS symptoms. But how timely of my body to start perim. at age 43,as i just turned it last week!Thank you kindly,AliOn Sep 29, 2009, at 3:28 PM, Tressler wrote:No it is not unususal for your period to come two weeks after the last one. I disagree. I think she should try taking iodine every day, instead of

every other day, and maybe add progesterone.

OK - on the 2 week cycles- is she getting a real period? Is it bleeding for more than a short time? Mid-cycle bleeding can occur when estradiol drops at ovulation. This has happened to me recently. I thought I was getting a period - but seems to be actually ovulation.

A basal body temperature chart could possibly help. This may not work if thyroid is causing low body temps though. Bloodwork would be expensive. The temperature chart is easy and cheap to do.

After having periods every 27 days, I got a full period, two weeks after the last one.But since I have been on 50 mg iodine for a fewmonths, that "body resetting itself" explanationseems to fit.I checked with my 45 year old sister, who is two years olderthan me and she still has regular periods. Thanks,AliOn Sep 30, 2009, at 3:29 AM, LeAnn Weaver wrote:OK - on the 2 week cycles- is she getting a real period? I don't know if she needs 50 mg per day or not as I don't know her levels and that's really more of Steph's and other people's strength to relate interpret test results. I encourage her to have the appropriate lab work done and I also think having a complete hormone panel is necessary for everyone. I wish doctors would automatically do for their patients.

That said, no amount of iodine is going to stop a woman from entering perimenopause when it's time. Sooner or later, we all go through that transition. It sounds like her body likes what iodine it is getting if her PMS symptoms are easing and the periods are feeling less painful. More iodine may be good for her health, depending on what her health issues are and what her lab work says.
