Guest guest
High estrogen can block thyroid and cause anxiety/depression. I saw you talked to Val. She is extremely knowledgeable. I’d follow her recommendation in a heartbeat. She’s been doing this for years and years. Did you tell her about the high estrogen? From: iodine [mailto:iodine ] On Behalf Of zonie0400 Sent: Sunday, July 26, 2009 3:27 PM iodine Subject: Re: SSRI's and iodine Thank you, I do a bunch of that already. I eat low carb because the avelox messed with my blood glucose regulation and it was getting high. It's within good range now without any diabetes meds. I take viatmin D, just started C again (I have slightly high ferritin levels and vit. C doesn't help that issue), probiotics for years and digestive enzymes, magnesium, milk thistly and did take Sam-e but it started to make the anxiety worse so stopped that. I also tried ashwagandha for a short period before this too. Just had sex hormones tested and estradiol was high at 325 that's very high for me and progesterone was 2.6. Had a hyster so i take bio identical hormones continuously. I don't know what is safe to take with the ssri in the way of supplements. I know 5 htp is contraindicated due to possibility of serotonin syndrome. I feel like I'm in between a rock and a hard spot. Thanks so much, Gigi > > Ok, here is what you should look into if you are interested in avoiding an SSRI> It will not be a quick fix but it will not add to the issues you are having as it will with an SSRI. > > First, the Cipro you were on is a fluoride based product. This is bad in many ways - as you found out now having tendon issues. The fluoride blocks thyroid hormones by blocking iodine absorption and utilization by the body. In doing this you were not getting the hormones you needed to increase your body's metabolic rate to function. Thank God he created us with a back up plan. These are the adrenals. When the thyroid lets us down the adrenals pick up the slack. This can only happen for a short period of time as they are the sprinters - not the marathon runners. We were designed to use them in fight or flight situations when you need adrenaline. But when we produce this for a long period of time we fall into adrenal fatigue which results in high cortisol levels. This cause the weight gain and mood changes along with sleep disruptions. Our sex hormones go in the tank because the adrenals don't multi task well and you need the energy so they just slack off on the sex hormones and then we hit a wall. Guest guest
Rhodiola rosea is another supplement that may ease depression. According to Wikipedia "A clinical trial showed significant effect for a Rhodiola extract in doses of 340–680 mg per day in 18–70-year-old male and female patients with mild-to-moderate depression." Ideally, it should contain 3% rosavins and 0.8–1% salidroside. I know the NSI brand meets this criteria. Also, rhodiola rosea is much cheaper than SAMe. You can get 240 capsules (120 doses) for $24.99 at vitacost.com. 5HTP is similar in cost to Rhodiola rosea. Diane
Guest guest
I did tell her about the high estrogen but she didn't comment on that. I have already started lowering my biest. I don't know why it went so high as I've been on the same dose for a long time. I know it works against thyroid and I have also been upping my progesterone too a bit. Val is great! She does such an awesome job on that forum. I don't know how she does it all. Very knowledgeable. Thanks so much for your support and help. Guest guest
Hi, I've always used that method too and still do but I've found that my temps are not as reliable as they used to be prior to the fluoroquinolone toxicity issue. Maybe they will be now or at least after I clear the reverse T3 out of the receptor sites. I keep getting reverse T3 problems so I think I'll just stay on it for a while if not indefinitely instead of bringing armour back into the mix. Thanks, Gigi > > > > > > > > > I would add that getting your adrenals tested, via saliva, would > > > also be a good thing to do. Guest guest
Looks like you have some good things going but maybe a good detox would help you. Are you taking probiotics now? Do you eat wheat and dairy? Honestly I would cut them out (I do in my own diet). Steph SSRI's and iodine> > > Hi There,> > I have just started an SSRI for anxiety and depression. Guest guest
Oh that's the other thing I forgot. My Dr. (Dr. Brownstein - the iodine / thyroid doc) uses a liver detox diet to help with RT3 issues. He does not use synthetic high doses of T3. He uses the www.liverdoctor.com as his protocol. A word of caution. Val is not a doctor and is still struggling with health issues herself. Taking higher doses of T3 is not without it's issues too. I know of quite a few who had sucess with RT3 and a liver cleanse. SSRI's and iodine> > > > > > Hi There,> > I have just started an SSRI for anxiety and depression. Guest guest
Your need to go on SSRI's and not feeling like you have any other choice. Yes part of it is your adrenal issue so no need to test it. Guest guest
Hi Gigi, The low carbohydrates may be a complicating factor. The carbohydrate is important for moving tryptophan into the brain so serotonin can be made. Discovered this when my daughter got depressed while on a low carb/high protein diet to help weight loss and candida issues. Tryptophan goes to the back of the queue when the amino acids line up to get into the brain. Having a meal of carbs plus protein (particularly if it is high tryptophan food) produces enough insulin to move the other amino acids into the cells and out of the blood stream, so a couple of hours later you have a carbohydrate only snack and this allows the tryptophan, which is now the like the last amino acid waiting, a free pass into the brain. The best time to do this is with the evening meal so that you are snacking around 9 or 10, just before bed. If you google around a book called 'Potatoes not Prozac' which has been updated and is now more about sugar addiction you will find more information about it - the author is Kathleen DesMaisons, here is a link to her site http://www.radiantrecovery.com/ Gail >> Thank you,> > I do a bunch of that already. Guest guest
Thank you Gail...I'll go check it out. I don't know how to eat then because the only reason I went low carb is to bring down my blood glucose. I wondered about this....actually been trying to add in a bit more carbs this week in hopes it would settle down the anxiety/depression. Guest guest
Thanks Steph, I have cleared reverse T3 by going iwth almost all cytomel before with a little armour but thought I'd try to go all cytomel in hopes it will clear faster. I do have on going stress with health issues so I might need to stick with the T3 for a while. Meanwhile, I know my liver is struggling. Guest guest
Iodine helps to balance blood sugar issues. Dr. Flechas had a person (diabetic) with glucose over 300 come completely off insulin after being on Iodine (Iodoral) for a time. I don't know how long or how much but he discusses it on one of his podcasts located on Curezone. Steph Re: SSRI's and iodine Thank you Gail...I'll go check it out.I don't know how to eat then because the only reason I went low carb is to bring down my blood glucose. I wondered about this....actually been trying to add in a bit more carbs this week in hopes it would settle down the anxiety/depression.Thank you so much,Gigi> >> > Thank you,> >> > I do a bunch of that already. Guest guest
So you have had this issue before. That just convinces me all the more that you have not dealt with the underlying issues and adding T3 over and over again hasn't fixed the root problem. The gall bladder issue is tricky. I have two friends struggling with that right now too. Steph SSRI's and iodine> > > > > > > > > > > > Hi There,> > > > I have just started an SSRI for anxiety and depression. Guest guest
What I'm wondering is if it's safe to take iodoral while on an SSRI? I can't find much on the subject. Guest guest
My gut feeling is that you need it even more. Guest guest
Depends on what you are using it for and how serious the health concern is. If it is mild to moderate depression/anxiety I recommend beginning with 1 tablet 2-3x daily. One can gradually move up to 2 tablets 3x daily if needed. Make sure that one of the doses is right before bed. The dose for children would be much lower depending upon weight and age. It helps tremendously with those that have trouble getting to sleep because their mind will not calm down. It will not make you feel spaced-out or sleepy. I always tell clients that it makes you feel very balanced, but still in control. It does not make one “not care or emotionless” as many SSRI’s do, but instead it will help one to react more calmly to situations that might normally put one emotionally over the top. Be Well Dr.L Loretta, " Below are some natural ways to relieve depression/anxiety: Lithium Orotate - natural form of lithium salts. We use LO with great success for depression, anxiety, bi-polar, ADD, ADHD, etc. Many people use it to get off of anti-depressants. This is NOT synthetic lithium. " How much Lithium Orotate? Guest guest
If your temps are not stable, then your adrenals need more support. If that is the case, then that could be why you have anxiety. Maybe try a stress dose to see if it helps. I know the fluoro can mess with lots of things, but maybe your body needs some extra help in dealing with it now. Taking extra HC for a short time (even a couple of days) won’t hurt, unless you are already high. But even then once you stop taking it after a couple of days, the high symptoms should subside. Some people, including Val, seem to have to stay on T3 for a long time, even forever. I know when I tried to go back to Armour it was a nightmare! I finally figured out that was the problem and have more or less fixed my mistake. Won’t try that again! T3 is all I need! J Just my 2 cents. Not medical advice! J From: iodine [mailto:iodine ] On Behalf Of zonie0400 Sent: Sunday, July 26, 2009 5:14 PM iodine Subject: Re: SSRI's and iodine Hi, I've always used that method too and still do but I've found that my temps are not as reliable as they used to be prior to the fluoroquinolone toxicity issue. Maybe they will be now or at least after I clear the reverse T3 out of the receptor sites. I keep getting reverse T3 problems so I think I'll just stay on it for a while if not indefinitely instead of bringing armour back into the mix. Guest guest
How much cytomel did you start with? Did you ramp up slowly? If not, you could be stressing your adrenals! Slow and steady is often better than faster. I know we all want to get well now, but in being hasty we tend to overdo it and end up backsliding. The liver detox is a fantastic idea! I always forget that part! It never hurts to make sure the liver is clean! From: iodine [mailto:iodine ] On Behalf Of zonie0400 Sent: Sunday, July 26, 2009 8:06 PM iodine Subject: Re: SSRI's and iodine Thanks Steph, I have cleared reverse T3 by going iwth almost all cytomel before with a little armour but thought I'd try to go all cytomel in hopes it will clear faster. I do have on going stress with health issues so I might need to stick with the T3 for a while. Meanwhile, I know my liver is struggling. I don't have a gallbladder adn the fluoroquinolones were damaging. Thanks, Gigi > > > > I would add that getting your adrenals tested, via saliva, would also be a > > good thing to do. Guest guest
Thanks for asking Gigi, She's doing ok at the moment, but things aren't straightforward. I found a Naturopath who works with NAET, and everytime she comes out of one of those sessions I can feel the weight lifted just a bit more - it's so lovely to take her home afterwards, she's happy, light and confident and chatty. Also did hair analysis and have been supplementing with Chromium, Manganese and Vanadium (and a lot more including Gymnema and B vitamins) to help with sugar balance stuff - her blood tests did look a bit prediabetic and the most recent ones look good. I've left what she eats pretty much up to her - you can't control everything for a teenager, and she was doing a lot better before I encouraged the protein diet stuff that a Naturopath recommended for the Candida. Used a Mood Appraisal tool that I have access to because I am a homoeopath - and found that her most important nutrients were for mood were Tryptophan, Tyrosine, Phenylalanine, Iron, Vit C, Vit B6, and Magnesium. We also use a lot of Fish oil, it's supposed to be the number one supplement for depression - use a minimum of 1000mg per 10kg of body weight, (it's supposed to take about a month to see results, I have heard people report that Krill works quicker, but Krill is more expensive even though you don't need as much of it as the normal Fish oil) . Am still looking for the key that means her body will work for her easily, instead of needing all the extra support, but we're getting there (wherever that is), Gail PS - the Radiant Recovery site is a really good resource for balancing the diet stuff. > > > > > > Thank you, > > > > > > I do a bunch of that already. Guest guest
I've been away for several days so I haven't noticed if anyone told you this already but Florinef also contains fluoride. Boron will clear fluoride out of the body making iodine therapy more effective.Raquel> > > > > > > Hi There,> > > >> > > > I have just started an SSRI for anxiety and depression.
