Guest guest
More on that question. Iodine builds your thyroid up and SSRI's work because they tamp your thyroid down. They seem to war with each other. I'm wondering if depression shouldn't be treated with total hormonal balance? A doctor who understands that and know's the right tests, blood or saliva, how to read the tests and willingness to prescribe the right kind of hormones would have to be found. Funds for this are out of reach for me so I fight anxiety and depression with walking with my friends. When they aren't available or winter with it's clouds come, I'm pretty lost. I wonder if there are free groups to help each other are around each area. Put out a call for whatever area you are in. I'm in Los Gatos CA so if anyone else is here to group around with let me know off line. artpages@... Guest guest
Thanks, so I'm still wondering if it's advised to take iodoral with ssri's or not. I'm between a rock and a hard spot then because I've had chronic health issues in general for 3 years because of a fluoroquinolone antibiotic. I have secondary adrenal insufficiency, hypthyroidism preextisting. I've got most of my hormones balanced I think. I take bioidentical hormone replacement due to an early hyster. The main problem right now is the reverse T3. So should one raise there thryoid homrones while on ssri's? Guest guest
I would think it was ok to take them together… but I am not a professional and can’t say for sure. You say you have your hormones balanced, but if you have anxiety and depression you obviously don’t! J Anxiety is usually low cortisol (adrenal insufficiency) and depression is low thyroid (hypothyroid). As you know, thyroid hormones are made from iodine. And you need cortisol to utilize thyroid. Have you checked your adrenals via salia tests? What form of thyroid med are you taking? If it has T4 in it, you will only make your RT3 problem worse. I know that from my own experience. And if you aren’t supporting your adrenals while taking thyroid it will makes things worse. According to some, the only way to reduce RT3 is to support adrenals (usually via cortisol) and take T3 only thyroid meds (like Cytomel). That’s what I’ve been doing and it is working. It’s going to take a long time, but I’m getting there! RT3_T3/ is a great place to find info. I too had issues with a fluoroquinolone antibiotic. It takes a long time to get over that too. I was a mess for about 2 years after taking Cipro. Made my Fibromyalgia a ton worse. It was a horrid 2 years. I so feel for you. I’ve been there and done that. I took every anti-depressant known, and none of them worked very well or for very long. But if you need it, take it. But try to balance your hormones and get off the anti-depressants. The side effects are not worth it. Guest guest
Please don't start down this path of SSRI's it only poisons enzymes and blocks receptors and your body was built to need this stuff. Let me get some info together on how you can handle it naturally. I was given a rx for Zoloft and took 1 and then just knew in my gut it wasn't the answer. Guest guest
Hi , Thanks so much. Well, I know for a fact that I have a reverse T3 problem. That has been an issue since the fluoroquinolones and maybe before even. The FQ's caused major anxiety and panick attacks immediately after taking it. I also have nerve/tendon damage. I had anxiety for a full 2 plus years. It slowly got better over time until the beginning of this year and I had my very first reprieve from the CNS issues fromt eh FQ's. I was totally symptoms free for almost 4 months. No anxiety, depression, dizziness, breathing problems etc......nothing! It was glorious and I thought I had finally beaten this FQ toxicity issue. Then the beginning of May....into a down cycle. First the breathing problems, then dizziness, then WHAMMO big time anxiety and depression hit. It literally broadsided me. So I'm hoping if I get out of this FQ cycle then the rest will start getting better too. I take HC for years now for what was believed to be secondary adrenal insuff. Although my acth has fluctuated after the FQ's so I know the fluoroquinolones (FQ's) affect the pituitary somehow. So I will probably have to increase my cytomel a bit after starting on zoloft? I have been on all T3 for about a week and a half now. I just don't want the zoloft to interfere with clearing my reverse T3. What I have noticed is that the past 4 days or so (just started zoloft yesterday) my BP and pulse have fluctuated a bit but they are in general quite low. So wondering if I should up my HC dose of 27.5mgs to a bit higher. I'm going to add in a bit more cytomel today too. Temps were getting better in general but this morning my temp was 97.4 before taking any thyroid meds. I always wonder if the temp drop in the morning can be because I'm on all T3 adn it's half life is shorter so do temps drop through the night. Did you also have central nervous system ADR's from the cipro? I took avelox and other FQ's before that not knowing they were causing me harm. I've suffered a severe reaction but am hopeful since I had 4 months of almost no ADR's besided chronic pain that I can indeed get there again. Thanks so much for your time and feedback. Guest guest
Hi There, I've read/researched about SSRI's and I don't want to take them. I " ve tried them many many years ago in my late teens and twenties and didn't like them back them and didn't take them ofr long but they did seem to get me over the hump. I wasn't hypothyroid yet then either. I've tried natural things like 5HTP and such and it didn't make enough of a difference as soon as I need it to. I am very depressed. So I feel like I don't have a choice but to get me over the hump. I am so scared right now on many levels and debated over the ssri's for a while but I need help now. It's urgent that I feel better soon. Gigi > > Please don't start down this path of SSRI's it only poisons enzymes and blocks receptors and your body was built to need this stuff. Guest guest
Hi and thanks, Do you also take thyroid meds? If so, did you have to increase your dose? What dose were you taking of zoloft? My doc started me at 25mgs then he wants me to go to 50mgs and then 100mgs. I think I will stop at 50mgs because I want the lowest dose that helps me and if I zoom up the dose like he wants I won't know what the lowest possible dose that works is. Thanks, Gigi > > i don't know whether you should or not - but i'm on zoloft and am in the process of coming off of it - i haven't had any weird effects and i've taken them together for over 2 months now - i'm coming off the zoloft because of the excess sweating that i get from it - i'd rather deal with being a little anxious versus being soaked w/sweat in 50 degree weather - lol! > > tanya > > SSRI's and iodine > > > Hi There, > > I have just started an SSRI for anxiety and depression. Guest guest
I had only been diagnosed with Fibro about a year when I took Cipro for bronchitis (I think). For a solid year after that I was miserable, then another year that was not so good. My husband would very lightly touch me and it felt like he was hitting me with a paddle of hot needles! I would spend days in bed unable to move from all of the pain – I could barely walk to the bathroom. It would come and go to some degree, but it was horrible. During that time (which was 1998-99), I thought it was just the Fibro. I only recently found out about the fluoro stuff and made that connection. It’s like it intesified my already horrid state of Fibro. Have you checked your aldosterone? I have low blood pressure/orthostatic hypotension and it has a lot to do with low aldosterone. I know when I first started balancing my hormones, I just did T3 and cortef. When I added Florinef (for the aldosterone) I felt great! It was like it was the missing link! Do you check your temps? I’d suggest doing that. Go to http://www.drrind.com/therapies/metabolic-temperature-graph and follow his instructions. 97.4 is hypothyroid (basal temp). I’m finally starting to see my basal temps go up. I started all of this last fall, but decided around Christmas to try to switch back to Armour. Big mistake. I crashed. I’ve been on all T3 again since April and I’m finally seeing some RT3 clearing. It takes forever! 3 months is usually the least amount of time it takes. But you have to make sure your adrenals are supported well enough before increasing thyroid meds. If you do the temp graphing, you can determine what’s going on and if you are ready for a raise in either cortisol or T3. I swear by it! I’d probably not take the Zoloft unless you are on the couch and unable to function. It will absolutely mess with your adrenals and thyroid and you don’t need that. I know when I started taking the cortef I felt less anxiety immediately. Maybe you need to ‘stress dose’ to see if that helps. Take 10-20 mg extra (over the course of the day) to see if that helps. It usually helps me if I get anxious for any reason. Sometimes that’s not the cause of the anxiety, but an extra 10mg dose won’t hurt if it’s not. I’d go to the RT3_T3 site and ask questions. They are familiar with the fluoro’s and such there too. (At least I seem to remember they are.) They are a very knowledgeable group and can really help better than I can. I will help any way I can. I hate to see anyone in any kind of pain! From: iodine [mailto:iodine ] On Behalf Of zonie0400 Sent: Sunday, July 26, 2009 9:04 AM iodine Subject: Re: SSRI's and iodine Hi , Thanks so much. Guest guest
i'd love to hear what you find out also - i'm in the process of coming off of them and would love another alternative. Guest guest
Ok, here is what you should look into if you are interested in avoiding an SSRI> It will not be a quick fix but it will not add to the issues you are having as it will with an SSRI. First, the Cipro you were on is a fluoride based product. This is bad in many ways - as you found out now having tendon issues. The fluoride blocks thyroid hormones by blocking iodine absorption and utilization by the body. In doing this you were not getting the hormones you needed to increase your body's metabolic rate to function. Thank God he created us with a back up plan. These are the adrenals. When the thyroid lets us down the adrenals pick up the slack. This can only happen for a short period of time as they are the sprinters - not the marathon runners. We were designed to use them in fight or flight situations when you need adrenaline. But when we produce this for a long period of time we fall into adrenal fatigue which results in high cortisol levels. This cause the weight gain and mood changes along with sleep disruptions. Our sex hormones go in the tank because the adrenals don't multi task well and you need the energy so they just slack off on the sex hormones and then we hit a wall. Because those are needed too. Second, being on Cipro, it is a toxic drug. This has more than likely caused your liver to be overloaded. When your liver is toxic your body is toxic and this creates issues with mood disorders. Third, the gut. Drugs destroy healthy gut bacteria and most of us do not take enough probiotics. Cipro being a broad spectrum antibiotic wipes out all of it. Good and bad. Did your doctor put you on a high dose probiotic when you were on this antibiotic? My guess is no. Did you or do you suffer from yeast infections or athletes foot? I am betting you have a raging case of candida and this can also alter moods. So if I were in your shoes, I would do the following. You are not suffering from a SSRI deficiency. No need to throw a blanket over your issues which is what this will do. 1. Check Vit D levels - 25 OH levels Should be between 60 -70 2. Get in the sun for 20 mins each day. That will help with Vit D, Seretonin and Melatonin balancing. 3. Clean up your diet (if you haven't already). No whites - sugars, breads, crackers, cookies. It's all junk and stresses your immune system and adrenals. No artificial sweeteners either. Get rid of HFCS - it's in everything. Eat good grass fed meats, fruits and veggies. 4. Detox your liver!! You may want to investigate a good program that will clean it up after all the junk it has had to deal with. I did a 28 day protocol with Metagenics Ultra Clear Plus (www.organicpharmacy.com - book and 3 cans of product is what you need and is about $210). It is pricey but it took care of my anxiety and depression in the 4 weeks. 5. Take in adequate Vit C (3,000 - 5,000 mgs) and Celtic Salt to help the adrenals. They are the largest storage of Vit C in the body. 6. Get your iodine - 50 mgs is the minimum I would say with all the fluoride you got from Cipro but you may have a detox reaction so watch for some issues that we may be able to help you with. Don't give up. Many (like myself) have gone through the healing crisis but knowing the light at the end of the tunnel is not an oncoming train will help you. 7. Get on a very good probiotic. I take UDO's Choice but have taken Metagenics. The product should be stored in the refrigerator section of your healthfood store and should contain a large number and variety of micro organisms. You will need to take this away from food and in the morning and evening. That gut is more than likely "leaky" and allowing proteins to leak through that your body is attacking. You can google Leaky Gut and see how this has mood issues. 8. Consider going gluten and dairy free. It has helped me and my children with our overall moods. If your gut is leaking then these are the substances that will aggravate you. 9. Check your sex hormones - balancing is key here - DHEA, Pregnenolone, Testosterone, Estridiol, Progesterone. I will highly recommend the Gut and Psychology Syndrome from Dr. Natasha McBride which will help you understand why all the gut healing is important. I heard her speak for a day at a conference last year. It was incredible how much our gut controls our brain. Natural things that help with anxiety - Ashwaganda Rhodioloa Licorice Root (can be problematic for some in increasing blood pressure) L-Theanine (very calming and from green tea) Herbs to help the liver Milk Thistle Dandelion Root Extract Adding lemon to water will help your liver too. So that is where I would start on your road to true healing. SSRI's and iodine Hi There,I have just started an SSRI for anxiety and depression. Guest guest
I would add that getting your adrenals tested, via saliva, would also be a good thing to do. I know you are taking cortisol, but you may need to adjust your dose. There is a group that does some test interpetation pretty well, even while on cortisol. Guest guest
Below are some natural ways to relieve depression/anxiety: Lithium Orotate – natural form of lithium salts. We use LO with great success for depression, anxiety, bi-polar, ADD, ADHD, etc. Many people use it to get off of anti-depressants. This is NOT synthetic lithium. B-Complex with added B6 and B12 (Methylcobalamin) Herbal Liver Support Good Fats – most people are deficient in this area. Healthy oils: olive oil, hemp seed oil, flax seed oil; nuts: almonds, pumpkin seeds; avocado; organic almond butter; dark chocolate. Stay away from hydrogenated oils – read labels. Saliva test hormone levels. Bio-identical progesterone cream can help with depression, anxiety, adrenal stress and mood swings. Vitamin C – Dosage varies to bowel tolerance. Will help with adrenal stress. Aromatherapy – a small bottle of Lavender Essential Oil is great to carry around. Put a drop or two in the palm of your hands, rub together and then cup over the nose and breathe deeply several times. It’s amazing how calming this can be. Can also place rub a drop on the back of the neck. Eat a healthy diet. Lots of organic vegetables and fruits. Eliminate white sugar. Sugar is implicated in mood swings and depression and can cause zinc deficiency. Are you getting enough zinc. Try to get 20-30 minutes of unprotected sun every day. Check Vitamin D-3 levels. Many people are deficient in Vitamin D and studies indicate that it definitely plays a role in mental health. http://www.cpnhelp.org/vitamin_d3_and_mental_hea Be Well Dr.L

Guest guest
I have fought severe depression and anxiety for forty years. It's put me in the hospital many times and onto disability as well. I used SRRIs when they first came out in the late eighties and only stopped about a year ago, when I found out that they are almost all flouride compounds and I had begun iodine supplementation and had started to realize that it was probable that the root cause of my troubles was mercury and other heavy metals. I had all my mercury fillings out and have been chelating very aggressively with DMSA and ALA, as well as sweating a lot of it out with saunas. I am currently on social security disability for treatment-resistant major depression, fibromyalgia, and chronic fatigue syndrome. I still have a lot of chelating to do, but I am just about well enough that I could work full time. What allowed me to work for twenty years was exercise and lots of sunshine, as well as a lot of vitamins and supplements. In the winter I used extremely bright lights in the morning and into the evening to fight off the Seasonal Affective Disorder. I exercised just about every day or the anxiety and depression would become unbearable. Instead of slowing the reuptake of serotonin to leave it in the synapse longer, you can go the other route and feed your brain the precursors to serotonin. I use 5HTP. I used to use tryptophan years ago before it was taken off the market. I see it is for sale again, but tryptophan is needed by viruses to replicate and I seem to have a dormant virus causing the chronic fatigue that gets activated by it (but not by the 5HTP). The SRRIs are not effective in the long run anyway. The brain adjusts itself after a few years and then you have to jump from one class of antidepressants to another, each working for a limited period of time.SAMe is another natural antidepressant, but causes too much anxiety for some (it's hard on the digestive track as well). A good stategy to use is to get lots of exercise, sunshine, and the natural precursors to the neurotransmitters you want to enhance. Then you can use the smallest amount of SRRI that you need to keep the mental demons at bay, while you experiment with other nutritional strategies in an attempt to get the whole body functioning properly. I also try to limit the electromagnetic radiation I'm exposed to, but nowadays you just about have to leave the planet to get anything like the natural background radiation that the earth generates as it spins around it's iron core. Very important also: take your armpit temperature first thing in the morning, chart it for a month or so, then find a doctor who will prescribe thyroid medication for you (hopefully Armour) if your temperature is too low. My temperature used to be as much as two degrees too low, ice cold hands in the summer, but my traditional thyroid tests never indicated anything abnormal. MarkP.S. Guest guest
Well, that is what I and most others think, but apparently you can according to this one group. I guess there is a way around it or something? It seems silly to not be able to test cortisol while on cortisol when you can test thyroid while on thyroid. But, it’s not my idea anyway, it’s just something I found on another group. Haven’t done it myself to try, but several people have on the other group. Just providing info, not trying to argue. Guest guest
I was thinking the same thing. We already know she is in crisis from the symptoms. I think it would be a waste of money to test until you are further on down the road and fine tuning. Guest guest
Mark lots of ppl are told for years that there is " nothing wrong " and tests are " normal " . I was told this for 30 years after a partial thyroidectomy and I was obviously thyroid sick. I find it interesting that taking enough iodine will raise TSH. for the conditions you have I think the big guns are cortef, enough iodine and Armour. gracia mark abbott wrote: > > > I have fought severe depression and anxiety for forty years. Guest guest
Thank you, I am taking vitamin D3, magnesium and B6 plus bilingual B12 due to low levels if not supplemented. I was taking 5 HTP for a short time but stopped because I started zoloft. I use bioidentical biest, proges and testost. My latest labs showed my estradiol was way too high (been on the same dose for a long time but went high for some reason) and progesterone probably too low. Free Testost in middle of range while total testost slightly over range. TAke hydorcortisone and cytomel right now. ....trying to clear reverse T3. I am very anxiety ridden today. I've been told that when starting an ssri that symptoms can get worse for a short time before they improve. Guest guest
Thank you, I do a bunch of that already. I eat low carb because the avelox messed with my blood glucose regulation and it was getting high. It's within good range now without any diabetes meds. I take viatmin D, just started C again (I have slightly high ferritin levels and vit. C doesn't help that issue), probiotics for years and digestive enzymes, magnesium, milk thistly and did take Sam-e but it started to make the anxiety worse so stopped that. I also tried ashwagandha for a short period before this too. Just had sex hormones tested and estradiol was high at 325 that's very high for me and progesterone was 2.6. Had a hyster so i take bio identical hormones continuously. I don't know what is safe to take with the ssri in the way of supplements. I know 5 htp is contraindicated due to possibility of serotonin syndrome. I feel like I'm in between a rock and a hard spot. Thanks so much, Gigi > > Ok, here is what you should look into if you are interested in avoiding an SSRI> It will not be a quick fix but it will not add to the issues you are having as it will with an SSRI. Guest guest
ZRT recommends the following: Hormone Users Special Instructions You do NOT need to stop current hormone therapy before testing Night Before Collection Testing is recommended to monitor hormone levels with supplementation. (You need to be on hormone therapy at least two weeks prior to collection.) To avoid contaminating sample* use clean pillowcases, towels, etc. Topical hormones users - rub in without using fingers (e.g. wrist to wrist as shown) for at least two days prior to collection. Skip use of anti-aging creams that may contain hormone traces. *Contamination of sample occurs when topical hormones enter saliva or tube during collection. This can happen when hormone traces present on skin or surfaces (e.g. linens, towels, doorknobs) touch lips, face, or tube during collection. Hormone Users Collection Chart Patches – Weekly/Bi-Weekly: At midpoint between applying patches; Daily: 12-24 hours AFTER applying patch Injections - At midpoint between injections 7-Keto DHEA - 3-5 days after last dose (not standard DHEA) Pills, Gels, Creams Sprays (Oral, Topical, Vaginal) - 12-24 hours AFTER last dose ((FOR TOPICAL: last application should not be applied to face or neck) Sublinguals and Troches - 36 hours AFTER last dose (Dissolve under tongue) THE FOLLOWING ALSO QUALIFY AS HORMONES (not limited to): Contraceptives, melatonin, cortisol, hydrocortisone, creams containing pregnenolone and/or placental derivatives. Collect as above. -----Original Message----- > I would add that getting your adrenals tested, via saliva, would > also be a good thing to do. Guest guest
Per Val, on the adrenal/natural thyroid forum.......she thinks I might need a bit more HC. I graphed my temps for the past week adn they are slightly unstable...not too bad. I went on all T3 cytomel about a week or so ago to clear the reverse T3 out. I've done saliva testing in the past but not recently. I did get a blood cortisol done about 2 weeks ago but they ran the total cortisol and not the freee cortisol like they were supposed to. The total cortisol was at the top of the range befor my AM meds. My BP and pulse however are very low which leads me to believe that I'm not on too much HC as I would think my BP would be high then. Thanks, Gigi > > I would add that getting your adrenals tested, via saliva, would also be a > good thing to do. I know you are taking cortisol, but you may need to > adjust your dose.
