Guest guest
Hi Jan, Just a quick note about iodine. The best type to take is either Lugol's 5% which is a combination of potassium iodide and iodine or the tablet form Iodoral, (www.optimox.com) which is exactly the same combination as Lugol's. Lugol's does not have horrible dyes in it so be careful of the iodine that you take, dyes will create reactions. Do not use iodine with IVP dyes!!! With Lugol's 5% one drop is 6.25mg so 8 drops is all you need for 50mg and then you do not drink it straight. Put it into a fruit juice or water. I have suffered from a goiter and a 3cm goiter and went onto iodine for 3 months. I came off (stupidly) to see if the iodine had any effect and my goiter is now a normal thyroid. My nodule is still there but is stable. I have now gone back to 50mg of Iodoral and will remain on it for the rest of my life. TSH is not a good indication of where your thyroid is. Have your FT4 and FT3 blood test. My TSH has always been within range but I have never felt well and my thyroid had eventually told me there was something wrong by becoming a goiter and then growing a nodule. I have also suffered from fibrocystic breasts and fibroids plus all the hypoT symptoms so I have obviously been deficient in iodine. Good luck and really it is worth taking > > I live in Australia and while my doctor and the pathology lab haven't heard of the iodine loading test he is willing to let me try it if the path lab will cooperate. I'm trying to understand exactly what it will show and what the procedure is. As I understand it I take 50 mg of iodine then collect my urine for 24 hours then take it to pathology to have it tested. The doc has prescribed iodine drops for me and the thought of drinking 50 mg of iodine has me gagging at the thought. I'm a little nervous as I am allergic to IVP dye which is iodine but the doctor assures me that people are meant to ingest iodine and not have it injected into the veins and that's where my problems lies. I'm not allergic to the iodine they use on the skin so I should be okay. It seems like a hell of a lot of iodine in one hit considering that the doc has only prescribed one drop per day in water. I'm sure that with more research I'll gain a better understanding of all this but any suggestions and advice will be warmly welcomed. I was diagnosed with a multinodular goitre two years ago and was promptly told by my previous doc that there was nothing wrong with my thyroid because my TSH was normal. I changed doctors promptly. > Jan >
Guest guest
i just got the results back from my 17 year old daughters iodine loading test from vrp...she has hashi's...she had been on 50 mg of iodoral for about 2 months before we did the test...i have misplaced the results but it said she was only spilling about 35% ...so obviously iodine deficient....so do we just continue the iodoral at 50 mg plus other nutrients?? thanks
Guest guest
Yes that means she kept 65% of the iodine she took so she is deficient. I would keep her on the same regimen and retest in about 9 mos. Guest guest
I'm about to take another iodine loading test and seem to remember a discussion about salt loading prior to the test. Is that something I should do even though I rarely salt load anymore? Thanks. BarbF
