I wrote this initially just to share with my siblings then thought maybe it

would be of use to Western WA bandster's too:

Subject: Your Easter Ham

If any of you are doing a ham for Easter, check out the Safeway ham and half

hams this week for 99 cents

a pound. I baked one up last XMAS with a glaze of OJ and brown sugar, it was one

of the best tasting hams

and I have ever eaten.

If you are looking for some cheaper 100% hamburger (ie very little fat) Safeway

has London Broil Top Round

Steak for $1.99 a pound. I got a five pound package yesterday and the butcher

sliced one of the steaks in half

(ie made it two 3/4 " pieces from a single one) and ran it through the

tenderizer. I use that for swiss stake or

as a cube steak. The local Safeway listed cube steaks at $4.29 a package. The

other steak in the big package

went through their grinder and so I have 100% lean hamburger for $1.99 a pound

while they make a big deal

of having 73% lean for $2.79 a pound. Today I am going to see if the butcher has

a device that slices the meat very thin

so I could use if for stroganof, stir fry or jerky. This deal on london broil

ends this Tuesday (today).

Safeway also has Farms bone in half chicken breasts for 99 cents a pound.

taught me to spread

a little olive oil on top surface of the breasts and put a minimal amount of

spice mix on them and bake for an hour or so at 350

degrees. Those came out so well!

Whoda thunk I'd be developing cooking skills so late in life?, an old dog can

learn a few new tricks anyway.

Personally I don't like to shop at Safeway as they always seem to have a catch

in their food deals. They have that Club card

you have to use to get a good price and they use that to track your purchases.

If they have a coupon then it's only good

for one transaction that day per customer. Fred Meyer treats customers better

but prices are high there too. WALMART has

best

prices for food in Shelton and they are often quality brands too. We

have a Red Apple but that's often a disappointment as they don't really

seem to have a butcher shop nor a service deli so the store often

doesn't have what is advertised.

Since I have had the lapband surgery I don't really eat that much but old habits

developed to cope with a small pension

still persist. Besides the money I save on meat means more to spend on corn

nuts, pistachios, and jerky.
