Dear friends

Estimation of subject numbers:

The inclusion/ exclusion criteria serve as the starting point for targeting potential subjects. Posters summarizing inclusion/ exclusion criteria can act as a prompt for staff and institution to contact the study team if they see a suitable subject. Remember that any such materials/ information will usually need to be approved by institutional review board (IRB)/ independent ethics committee (IEC) prior to use.

Some hospitals have large research teams who review the eligibility of all subjects admitted for participation in a trial. At other sites, there may only be the principal investigator and CRC managing one or more trials: in this case, you might be responsible for identifying potential study subjects. Three important questions that enable a focused approach to looking for eligible subjects are mentioned below.

QUESTIONS TO HELP YOU TO IDENTIFY WHERE TO LOOK FOR ELIGIBLE SUBJECTS.

Question

Explanation

What is the severity of the condition being studied?

Will your subjects be found in physicians’ surgeries or will they be hospital in-patients or out-patients?

Is the condition acute or chronic?

Subjects with acute diseases are likely to be admitted as hospital in-patients.

Is there a specific location where you may find this subject population?

For example, you are most likely to find renal subjects in a dialysis unit and post myocardial infarction subjects in rehabilitation clinic.

Warm Regards
