Guest guest
Dear Anupama, You have rightly pointed out the problem. It is really very difficult to correlate the occurrence of a particular disease to the mercury in the dental fillings. Have a look at the following examples: · A lady suffered from atopic dermatitis and was on treatment with steroids for a period of more than 8 years, after which her symptoms were not relieved even with steroids and her skin was in the worst possible condition. It was then that a doctor advised her a detailed investigation plan. The result of a blood test (Lymphocyte Proliferation Test) showed that she was highly allergic to dental amalgam and also to mites, pollen, metal and some food groups. Following this she had to get all her dental fillings removed and within 2 months after that she had a dramatic relief from all her symptoms. · A 35 years old dentist started having symptoms like confusion, insomnia, digestive problems, feeling of tiredness , irritability and bad breath. She felt much more healthy when she was younger. At first, she attributed feeling unhealthy to the aging process. But when she finally realized that what she was feeling was not normal aging she got herself investigated. Her blood tests did not show any abnormalities other than a high candida count, but when she researched the various approaches to eradicate Candida, she was surprised to find that the fungus has a direct relationship with heavy metal toxicity. Apparently, our bodies 'farm' the Candida to have them help absorb some of the toxicity created in our bodies from the heavy metals. She then ran some more tests to uncover the possibility of being burdened by other heavy metals. After Urine Toxic Elements and Fecal Metals tests, Hair Analysis and a Syncrometer Test of saliva samples, the results were shocking. All tests revealed abnormal levels of various metals; including arsenic, nickel and lead. However, it was the mercury levels that were off the charts, and appeared consistently in every test. Where was this mercury coming from? As most dentists, even she had been indoctrinated to believe that amalgam fillings, were perfectly safe. So she wondered- Could my use of amalgams, both in my patient's mouth and on my own be a source of mercury toxicity? Subsequently she got all her amalgam fillings removed and now happily reports that she is now 51 years old and feels like 20. Ever since she has spent bulk of her time developing a protocol to help patients detoxify (perhaps driven by some guilt over the many years that she used amalgams on her patients). So you see, its so difficult to pin-point the cause. The above 2 examples are from developed economies. Just think of our country, are people so aware about their health? Most of the minor symptoms usually go unnoticed and even if one approaches a doctor for these nobody will even think of associating these with the dental fillings. Many dentists now offer amalgam replacement programmes for patients, and guidelines are available for the procedures to be followed before, during and after the amalgam removal in order to avoid the pulse of mercury exposure which normally accompanies restoration removal. Typically, there is a need for nutritional support with high-dose antioxidant nutrients in the three months leading up to removal and for six months afterwards. During the procedure there should be routine use of a rubber dam and a separate air supply for patient, delivered by nose mask. Protective clothing for the patient should be used, as well as high volume suction and on-tooth air scavengers. On the other hand, there are Consumer Reports magazines, among others, which claim that the connection between many of these diseases and amalgam fillings is solely revenue generating propaganda. Consumer Reports told its readers on several occasions that "if a dentist wants to remove your fillings because they contain mercury, watch your walletâ€.
