Respected members,

Monoamine oxidase inhibitors were the first clinically used anti-depressant drugs.

The classification is as follows

MAO inhibitors

Irreversible nonselective MAOI

Phenelzine (45-60mg/d)

Isocarboxazid (10-30 mg/d)

Tranylcypromine (10-20mg/d)

Reversible inhibitor of MAO A (RIMA)

Moclobemide

MAO B inhibitor

selegiline

Adverse reactions

CNS S/E Insomnia, tremors, hyperreflexia

May activate psychosis

Hypertensive crisis if taken with substances containing sympathetic amines (cheese, red wine, yeast extract, yogert, buttermilk, soyabeans, chocolates, figs, ripe bananas, meat extracts)

Anticholinergic effects

Potentiate the effects of TCA and SSRI
