Classical economics focused on the ‘usefulness’ that individuals placed on goods and services. This usefulness is better described as ‘utility’. Classical economists believed that the:

Utility of individuals was entirely dependent on their personal consumption of goods and services.

Welfare of society was merely the sum of the utilities of all the individual members of that society.
