Dr. Medha Joshi, Head, Dept. of Library Science, Tata Memorial Hospital (Tata Memorial Center), Mumbai (mva_joshi@...) Maximum number of participants: 40 (on first come – first serve basis) Date : November 18, 2010 Time : 3:30 – 5:00 p.m. Venue : All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi Learning objectives: (1) To enable the IEC members to understand what criteria should be adopted for ethics review of research (2) Evolving a shared understanding of how to maintain a balance between scientific and ethics review of research to ensure that the rights and welfare of research participants are protected. Ethics committees in India often have to take the dual responsibility of scientific and ethical review of proposals. In this context, a debate often arises whether the proposal review is tilted more in favor of scientific review as opposed to ethical review. This workshop strives to analyze the different criteria used by the ICMR and international ethics guidelines in elucidating the process for ethical review of the proposals with the help of lectures, case studies, and small group discussions. Best practices for balancing ethics and scientific review of proposals will be discussed. Number of participants is limited to 40 to maintain participatory nature of discussions. Those interested in participating please contact Dr. S. Swarnalakshmi at Swarna@... with your name and institutional affiliation (if any). Note: Since venue, date and time are liable to change, please consult final program schedule at the conference for confirmation of the same.
