We might think of our medical consults as events equivalent to the Super

Bowl, requiring self-assessment, preparations and a game plan.

The challenge being to do all or some of the following in a very short time

-

(the exam time often limited by our doctor's case load).

.. Communicate any new symptoms or un-expected side effects

.. Discuss meaning test results

.. Discuss need to treat, or when to change the treatment

.. Discuss full range of appropriate therapies when needed, including

trials

(This could require a separate consult)

.. Inquire about supportive care, physical / psychosocial)

.. Review and discuss medications

(Interactions? What side effects to report?)

.. Discuss next consult/tests?

So there's a lot to think about, and plan for.

See for guidance on Optimizing Doctor Visits http://bit.ly/cmfKKW

Which includes a checklist for reporting symptoms/side effects:

http://www.lymphomation.org/symptoms.pdf

You might fill this form out in advance of your consult to help make the

best use of the time.

All the best,
