Guest guest
White Tea -- What's All the Fuss About? . . . all the benefits of green tea and more! Black, green and white teas are all made from the same tea plant, and they all have health benefits. But green tea is a healthier choice than black, and white is the best choice of all. It's the polyphenols in tea that are responsible for the lion's share of its health benefits, especially the anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. You may have heard about EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate), which appears to be the most beneficial of tea's polyphenols. Significantly more polyphenols and EGCG are found in green tea than black tea; and even more are found in white tea. The tea plant has a proclivity for attracting the toxin fluoride. Black tea has the most, green tea less, and white tea least of all, because it is made from the youngest leaves. Fluoride in tea is much higher than the Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) set for fluoride in drinking water. Tea leaves accumulate more fluoride (from pollution of soil and air) than any other edible plant, and fluoride content in tea has risen dramatically over the last 20 years. Theanine is a calming component in tea that balances its caffeine content. Of the three teas, black tea has the least theanine, green tea more, and white tea comes out the winner again with the most theanine. Both green and white tea have less caffeine than black tea. Although there are many different varieties of both, with varying levels of caffeine, overall, white tea tends to have less, and Beyond Health's white tea is very low in caffeine. Why haven't you heard more about white tea? In the orient, white tea's superiority is well known, but historically it has been rare and expensive, a luxury item, while green tea has been a staple. But with increasing demand in the West (sales of white tea have tripled since 2001), white tea has become increasingly affordable. At this point, given its tremendous health benefits, it meets my standards for being a very good value for the money. Because it's been around so much longer, there is much more in the scientific literature on green tea than on white tea, and I've written before about the many health benefits of green tea, with more being discovered all the time. Well, just about anything green tea can do, white tea can do better! It's because the same polyphenols give both green and white tea most of their health-building clout, and white tea has more of them. Some specific research that has been done on white tea has shown it is a more powerful cancer fighter than green tea; that it has more antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal capabilities than green tea; that it performed way better as an anti-oxidant and in preventing enzymes that break down elastin and collagen -- leading to wrinkles -- than green tea and 19 other herbs known for having anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory capabilities; and that it helps break down fat and slows down the incorporation of fat into human fat cells -- helpful for those who'd like to shed some pounds. Tea also contains chemicals that help the body to detoxify, elevating important detoxifying enzymes and preventing their fall, as normally seen after toxin exposure. Here again, white tea is the winner, containing even more of the helpful nutrients. There'll be lots more good news ahead about white tea as researchers hop on the white tea bandwagon. Of course Beyond Health's white tea is a cut above the others, with even less caffeine and fluoride, and even more of those great, health-building polyphenols than any other white tea on the market. And many people have told us they prefer the sweeter taste of white tea to the green. Don't Look for Polyphenols in Bottled Tea .. . . there are hardly any, but don't worry, there's plenty of sugar! Research presented at a recent meeting of the American Chemical Society was a shocker for anyone who drinks bottled tea assuming it's a healthy beverage. The study tested six brands of bottled tea to measure their polyphenol content. There were precious few! Of the six bottled teas tested, the best offered just over 80 mg of polyphenols per 16-ounce bottle; the worst provided only 3 mg. Compare this to our green or white teas, which provide more than 1,150 mg per cup!The study also found these bottled teas were full of sugar. Apart from adding calories, sugar is a deadly, metabolic poison. In addition, such teas are loaded with fluoride, often exceeding established safety limits. Bottled tea contain a little of the good stuff and a lot of the bad stuff. Would you rather drink a glass of expensive, toxic, sugary tea-like liquid or brew your own healthy tea! Alert! enfish Swimming Towards You! . . . just say NO to the FDA!They're at it again. The Federal Drug Administration is mucking around with genetic engineering and our food.On August 25th, the FDA announced that it would begin consideration of a request by AquaBounty Technologies to start producing genetically engineered (GE) salmon that will grow at twice the normal rate.Hmm, what else grows at multiples of the normal rate? Could it be . . . cancer?Although the human health impact of eating GE fish hasn't been studied, what we do know about GE food is very, very bad news. It's important to nip this one in the bud because it's the first request to genetically engineer an animal. So if it's approved, it will be a landmark decision. The hearing for approving the GE salmon is scheduled for September 19th, so get your comments on the record now! You can go to the Alliance for Natural Health or the Center for Food Safety to read more about this issue and/or to sign a petition to the FDA. And here's another astounding development that's apt to make your blood boil: there will be a second hearing on whether or not the GE fish will have to be labeled as such!Of course we wise consumers avoid farmed salmon anyway, but we should not let this disregard of consumers' right to know what they're eating slip by. Newsclip Nuggets . . . ways to optimize your health Brewing White Tea. You'll get the best taste using water under 180 degrees Fahrenheit (80 degrees Celsius). Water boils at 212 degrees, and simmers at 190, so wait until it settles down. You can brew for 3 minutes, but many prefer 10. You can get two more brews out of the leaves. Brew a little longer each time, so the third brew could take as much as 15 minutes. Sun Protection. Add drinking cooled white tea to your other anti-oxidants for skin protection as well as hydration on hot, sunny days. One Way to Prevent Alzheimer's is to drink plenty of white tea. It protects the brain and improves age-related cognitive decline as well as Parkinson's, stroke, Huntington's, ALS, Alzheimer's and other brain diseases. It also specifically prevents formation of beta amyloid plaque, the hallmark of Alzheimer's disease.
