dra, my thinking on this is that weed wouldn't have any effect on us

b/c we're not *really* " vomiting " -- we are regurgitating chewed-up food

that has been sitting in our stomachs. Vomiting technically means

" disgorging the contents of the stomach through the mouth " and that's NOT

what we do.

Marijuana helps with the NAUSEA that causes people to vomit --

chemotherapy causes nausea which causes vomiting, so chemo patients who

smoke weed might not vomit b/c their nausea has been eliminated, not

because of any effect on the vomiting process itself. (The " munchies " of

marijuana also help people who have a loss of appetite.)

Since our regurgitation isn't because of nausea, weed is unlikely to have

an effect, unless by some chance it has an effect on the LES pressure.

But hey, what better way to get the word out to the medical community (and

the general public) about what achalasia is than to try to petition for

" medical use of marijuana " for our symptoms???!!!???!!! We'd be getting

major coverage in every media source there is! :o)

Sorry, Sandi, you're exactly right! That's what I get for trying to hurry up and answer stuff from home in the morning before I go to the office! Sheesh, the way I wrote it doesn't make any sense...we're not throwing up from our stomach, we're throwing up from our stomach!!! *sigh*

Thanks for fixing my goof !!!! I wish there was a better word for the "esophageal regurgitating" that we do -- so many people say "getting sick to my stomach" or "throwing up" or "barfing" or "vomiting" or "puking" or "ralphing" or "retching" or "praising the porcelain god", all of which in my mind mean true VOMIT, coming from the stomach as a result of nausea. The word "regurgitate" is one that's not used as commonly as the others, so I think that's why I like to use it for our "esophageal spewing" -- to kind of set it apart from regular old barfing. With all the different words/phrases for the act of vomiting, it gets confusing!

Deb, who promises to drink more caffeine before posting in the future!

That time I was just picking on myself, though, saying how it didn't make sense at all the way I had written it the first time. How about a big clarification:Vomiting means bringing up the contents of the STOMACH. When we have food come up due to our achalasia, we are NOT vomiting stomach contents. We are regurgitating food that we chewed and swallowed, but it never made it to our stomach because the LES never let it pass through. So we are bringing up ESOPHAGEAL contents only, which is not actually vomit.

Is that better? :o)Deb

I'm sure mj would relax your E. I know when

I was at my worst I drank a glass of wine

before every meal. It really helped me.

I think I remember someone saying they had

trouble with alcohol. I couldn't drink

beer but wine was great. I also love a

strawberry daquire, let it sit and melt

and it went down nice and smooth towards

the end of the glass!

" Regurgitate " is also the word that is commonly used in the

literature. I think it is also the word used for the act of bringing

things up that have been swallowed in a stage act. It can imply a

more willful act than something like vomiting.

Actually, there are reports that it does relax the LES. There are

reports, that it does help some with achalasia. I have not personally

tried this treatment. Think if it doesn't work but causes a

tremendous case of the munchies. Bummer! I don't know if I would

notice the munchies. I seem to have a constant case of that anyway.

Not sure what the status of AZ's medical use law is at this point.

Seems the Suprem Court, or some court, recently found in favor of it,

at least to some degree. The uncertainty would be troubling.

" Man does not live by bread alone. " Personally, I think I would

starve in other ways if I used it. Mentally and emotionally I never

feel better than when I have a clear head (other things being equal).

If other things were not equal, but were very bad, and there was no

other option, maybe. Does anyone thinking this would be a reallistic

option?

Notan,

I would have to be pretty desparate to consider using MJ

to help me eat. I'd be afraid of trading in one disease

for another more deadly, lung cancer.

Besides your right if you can't physically eat and

give yourself the munchies that would be torture.

I guess you could put Taco Bell in a blender.

Yeah, I agree. I'd be giving up one problem for another, imagine me

explaining this to my six year old. This is bad, don't do this, this

is medicine. We'd be sitting around stoned, staring at the screen

rather than typing, thinking " Oh wow, I like the Green border

Duuuuude.... "

I used to smoke pot long ago and gave it up, it was wrong, I got

hooked on the stuff. It really messed with my head, there were times

I was at work, and even if I was not stoned, I felt like I was.

Flashbacks, residual TCH releasing into the blood stream.

I would have to be incredibly desperate before I tried pot.

After reading Hawaii 's accounting of his teen years, I got to wondering if it has a "stress" effect or a "muscular" effect, too -- or maybe even a combination of both? Have you seen anything about that? (never having tried weed, I don't really know what it physically does to the body, besides make you happy and hungry!)

I have not personally tried this treatment. Think if it doesn't work but causes a tremendous case of the munchies. Bummer!

I had a similar thought, and then when I saw you mentioned it too, I was thinking "great minds think alike!" LOL

"Man does not live by bread alone." Personally, I think I would starve in other ways if I used it. Mentally and emotionally I never feel better than when I have a clear head (other things being equal).

I *so* know what you mean. When I was in labor w/ my son, he had the umbilical cord wrapped around his neck and wasn't tolerating labor. I had planned on doing "natural childbirth" and had a whole arsenal of pain-coping techniques.... I chose a birthing center that had big soaker tubs, birthing balls, rockers, etc., plus I planned on walking, squatting, all-fours, etc., to deal with labor. Instead, I was forced to lie in bed, half on my back and half on my left side at roughly a 45-degree angle (which aggravated my hip/spine condition) and I had all kinds of monitors and tubes sticking in places that tubes and monitors really shouldn't be allowed to go, if you catch my drift!

There was NOTHING I could do for myself for "coping techniques" and a nurse offered me Stadol for the pain. After repeated reassurances that it wouldn't harm , I stupidly agreed. The first three contractions were great.... then it wore off in the middle of the fourth contraction. At this point I was not only in pain AGAIN, but I also didn't have my mental faculties in full functioning order -- I was "high" and in pain and essentially chained in one position, unable to move. At least before the Stadol I was "with it" enough to mentally talk myself through the process, but after the Stadol I was just beyond control of my mental function. My husband said the difference was clearly visible to him, too -- before the drug, I was in pain and extremely uncomfortable, but I was still "me" -- a strong, intelligent, capable woman; after the drug, I was weak, whiny, and pretty much a mess!

If other things were not equal, but were very bad, and there was no other option, maybe. Does anyone thinking this would be a reallistic option?

Like I said before, I've never done weed, but based on my experience with Stadol, there's no way in he!! I'd consider using weed to be able to eat. I'd rather have a feeding tube up my nose and get my nutrition using a syringe to squirt it into the tube than to be unable to have my mental faculties every day!Deb

That's the way I look at it too, Jen -- I've been called Deb, Debbi, Debbie, Debby, Deborah, Debra, etc., and I don't get too offended by any variation of spelling as long as it's still basically my name. I've certainly been called MUCH worse things than "Debby" if you know what I mean!!! :o)Deb/Debbi who is technically Deborah

Marijuana.

FWIW, it doesn’t do squat for my fibro, but it helps with migraines (and

makes me want to eat fluorescent colored cereal). It’d be nice if

it helped with the fibro too though…

Marijuana, pot, etc. I call it my miracle drug. How else could I go from a level 8-9 pain down to zero! There are just far too many ignorant people in this country. But I don't go out after smoking and I certainly wouldn't drive a car. Sometimes I go from an 8-9 pain level to cleaning my house even. Its a GD miracle.

Chalkit up to funky drug reactions.  I can take Kadian (which is an opiate) and thathelps knock out some of the pain but it doesn’t do squat for my mom.  Neitherof us has any luck with Oxycontin either but Vicodin at least will make mesleep, which isn’t an ideal solution, but if the pain’s really bad I’ll take it. It’skind of funny, but when the doc prescribed the Kadian for me (I had a torn rotatorcuff and 3 herniated disks in my neck at the time) he kept saying it could behighly addicting, but I still have some of the refill of that original prescriptionsitting on the shelf.  All it did was take enough of the pain away so I couldat least function, which is all I wanted at that point.Sherry From: [mailto: ] OnBehalf Of RaffileSent: Wednesday, August 12, 2009 7:27 PM Subject: RE: MJ That's too bad, Sherry. My Dr won't give me anything for pain; because 20 years ago I was a practicing drug addict. So the pain I have to take buffered asprin. I have terrible pain in my nick and shoulders from osteoarthritis, which eventually turns in to migraines. I can't seem to win for loosing. I get so "D" frustrated with these drs! I also have emphysema, and between these to major illness' I have squat for pain relief.

My pulmonary Dr is a great help with that illness; but my family Dr has yet sent me to any specialist for the fibro.

Can you find other primary to go too? I can't even begin to tell you how STUPID

I think your doctor is for not giving you anything for pain because you're a

former addict. If that was the attitude of every doctor out there I think

there'd be a lot less people getting decent pain management (and there probably

aren't enough as there are).
