Hi all

I am about 3 days behind in my email so please forgive me if you have written

but have not received an answer yet.

In December my blood sugars went through the roof and my doc has tried several

different combinations of tablets but even the top dosage of those was not

enough. I almost crawled into his office today as I have had it with high blood

sugars and even had to go to cutting my calorie intake to very little, didn't

help.

So today he started me on Insulin, the new long acting stable type called

Levemir (insulin detemir) starting at 5 units once and will build from that.

That is not a lot of insulin to begin with but with my whacky system. We are

really shooting into the dark here as normally I would have to go through the

local Diabetic Education Centre to be instructed over a period of weeks. So the

doc took charge but I ended up at the DEC anyway as the pharmacy we use had the

insulin but no pens.

Arghhhhhhhh!!!! Fortunately the head nurse at the centre made time for me for

some quick instructions. It probably helped that I have known her for about 30

years and have been friends for a good part of that. Anyway, I was supposed to

inject my dose as soon as I got home, but, I checked my blood sugar and it was

good, a bit low for a shot of insulin. Just practicing plunging the needle into

my abdomen must have scared my pancreas to secret more insulin. <GBG>

Just one more health problem that I did not need over the Christmas/New Year

Season. Had to severely curtail my appetite for all the good stuff. I had to

laugh when Bev, the nurse, went over the symptoms of hypoglycaemia (low blood

sugar) and I said, " know just how that feels. " Exactly the same symptoms as

hyperglycaemia (high blood sugar) that I had suffered with for the past month

and a half, not to mention the side effects of some of the medications I am on.

So now I trudge along daily driving into the city every morning to check in with

my doc. Will be a nasty gasoline bill come February. Of course, the pain keeps

on trudging along as well.

Some days it just doesn't pay to get out of bed.

Fr. Dave
