Guest guest
Hi all Went in for my appointment with my primary care physcian this morning and after being questioned and poked I left with prescriptions for half the pharmacy...... Well that is a bit much. He has upped my OxyContin to 20 mgm 4 times per day, which does work as that is what I have been taking anyway. I am supposed to continue with the Voltaren and he has added Neurontin 600 mgm three times daily and Flomax 0.4mgm once daily. The Flomax is supposed to help the process of urination which I am having problems with lately. Not so much not being able to hold it but not being able to let it out at times. In the meantime, we await appointments for an MRI and/or CT Scan and nerve conductivity tests. So now my pill box looks chocked full. So now my medications are OxyContin SR 20 mgm 4 or 5 daily Neurontin up to 600 mgms 3 times daily Voltaren 75 mgm twice daily (breakfast and supper) Propranolol 25 mgms three times daily (for tremours) Lanoxin 0.375 mgm daily (for heart arithmea) Flomax 0.4 mgm at bedtime Prozac 40 mgms at bedtime Elavil 50 mgm once daily Zopiclone 7.5 mgm to 15 mgms at bedtime. Trying to cut this one out as it causes some real nasty side effects as you get older. I am bringing up the dosage of Neurontin gradually over the next week or so. Tomorrow at 12:00 AM Mountain Daylight Saving Time I turn the next milestone in my life. My 65th birthday and by the looks of the medication that will be in my system by tomorrow noon hour, I will not need to toast with a glass of wine or any other alcoholic drink, I will be on a trip anyway,
Guest guest
Wow. Looks like you have not missed too many other prescriptions. I thought I was taking a lot. I sure hope that you get some help from it and perhaps eventually be able to go off some of it. By the way, happy birthday, Dave. You have been a blessing to many and you so frequently have given great advice. You are now what we in the U.S. call the official retirement age (although that is creeping up to 67). Bill By the way, as an update, I have had my neck fusion surgery May 1. So far it is looking good. I have to wear this neck collar for 6 weeks and it makes it hard to type since I need to look at the keyboard once and a while to find some of the keys. The surgery went well. They fused c3 to c4 and c4 to c5. The first week was horrible but now the pain is leaving and I am able to swallow more than liquids. So far soft foods but I am fighting my way up the food chain again. Guest guest
HEY JENN! SO SORRY TO HEAR YOU ARE FEELING SO CRAPPY! WITH REGARDS TO THE MEDS...I DID NOT HAVE ANY GOOD RESULTS FROM SOMA...I HAVE BETTER RESULTS FROM BACLOFEN. THIS IS NOT TO SAY THAT YOU WON'T LOVE SOMA....SO...MAYBE TRY IT FOR ABOUT 7-14 DAYS AND SEE IF IT HELPS YOU. THE SPASMS I GET IN MY ANKLE HAVE BEEN SO VIOLENT AT TIMES THAT THEY HAVE ACTUALLY DISLOCATED MY ANKLE THREE TIMES SO FAR. IT JUST SNAPS IT BACK SO VIOLENTLY IT POPS. BACLOFEN IN THE PUMP REALLY HELPED IT..BUT I NO LONGER HAVE MY PUMP, SO I NEED HIGH DOSAGES OF ORAL BACLOFEN. FOR PAIN I AM TAKING 80 MGS OF METHADONE EVERY 6 HOURS AND 100 MGS OF MSCONTIN EVERY 12. THIS IS CALMING SOME OF THE PAIN...BUT AS YOU KNOW NOTHING STOPS THE BURN. AS FAR AS YOUR MEDS WITH ANY INTERACTIONS OR QUESTIONS....S/W YOUR PHARMACIST...HE OR SHE MAY REALLY HELP YOU. I HAVE A SMALL MOM AND POPS ONE THAT I USE.....THEY ARE GREAT. THE BIGGER ONES ARE GREAT TOO..SINCE ALL THE INFORMATION IS PRINTED RIGHT ON THE SHEET THAT YOU GET WITH THE MEDS...IF NOT..YOU CAN ALWAYS CALL THEM...THEY SHOULD BE A GREAT HELP TO YOU WITH MED QUESTIONS. ALSO, MOST PAIN DOCS HAVE PA'S OR NURSES WHO HANDLE ALOT OF MED QUESTIONS...YOU CAN REALLY RELY ON THEM ALOT TO BE A " GO-BETWEEN YOU AND THE DOC...SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO WAIT A LONG TIME FOR AN ANSWER TO A NON EMERGENT QUESTION. I HOPE THIS HELPS A WEE BIT, SWEETIE! HANG IN ....YOU CAN DO IT!!! I AM HERE IF YOU NEED A SHOULDER..LOVE YA! Guest guest
I take 20mg Oxy every 1 1/2 hours and then the Methadone 20 mg 5 times a day. I take the Soma 350mg 3 times a day, Lyrica 150 mg 2 times a day, Elavil 200 mg 1 time a day and an antidepressant (can't remember the name) and I still feel pain. It is hard to believe looking at this list on paper that I am coherent at all. The Soma isn't making me sleep like the doctor suggested it would and I hoped it would. I would like to just pretty much sleep and eat until the trial. I think I am at the max dose on these meds...has anyone taken more than that? In a message dated 8/2/2008 1:00:57 P.M. Guest guest
HEY JENN! I LOVED THE PUMP....BUT IT DIDN'T LOVE ME...IT MALFUNCTIONED TWICE...BIG TIME ON ME...NOW PLEASE DON'T WORRY...ALOT OF FOLKS HAVE GREAT RESULTS WITH THEIR PUMPS. I DON'T WANT YOU TO BE AFRAID OF THE BAD RESULTS THAT I HAD. THE FIRST ONE WAS THE PUMP DID NOT ALARM AND IT RAN DRY WITH MORPHINE, BACLOFEN AND BUBIVICAINE. I WENT THROUGH AN AWFUL WITHDRAWL. I WAS IN THE HOSP. FOR A FEW DAYS IT WAS SO SEVERE. THE SECOND TIME THE MEDS NEVER DISPENCED....NOT ONE MED RAN THROUGH THE PUMP...AND AGAIN WENT THROUGH WITHDRAWL..NOT AS BAD..BUT STILL VERY FRUSTRATING. I FEEL THAT MEDTRONIC HANDLED IT POORLY AS THEY TOLD ME THAT THIS HAS NEVER HAPPENDED TO ANYONE IN THE PAST TO THEIR KNOWLEDGE..AND THEN I SPOKE WITH SOME FOLKS WHO HAD THE SAME PROBLEM....NO ALARM AND DRY...WITHDRAWL AND THEY TOO WERE TOLD THE SAME THING. I NEVER ONCE WAS LATE FOR A REFILL OR AN APPT WITH THE DR. NOW...WITH THAT SAID..PLEASE DON'T LET MY EXPERIENCE SWAY YOUR DECISION...ALOT OF OTHER FOLKS I SPOKE WITH LOVE THEIR PUMPS AND WOULD NEVER GIVE THEM UP I WILL SAY THAT WHEN MINE WORKED WELL,,,,IT CONTROLLED THE SPASMS SO WELL!!! IF I HAD SOME, ALL I HAD TO DO WAS GO TO THE DR...AND BOOM..TURN IT UP...AND THEY WERE GONE I KNOW ALOT TO CHEW ON, SWEETIE. HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND. Guest guest
I HAVE BEEN TAKING MEDS FOR ABOUT 10 YEARS NOW....AND YOU JUST HAVE TO PLAY AROUND WITH THE DOSAGE WITH THE DR UNTIL YOU GET SOME RELIEF. FOR BREAKTHROUGH PAIN I TAKE DILAUDID 4 MGS EVERY 4-6 HOURS AS NEEDED. THIS HELPS ME MORE THAN THE OXY IR...JUST A THOUGHT FOR YOU? I HOPE YOU ARE DOING OKAY TONIGHT, HON. HANG IN! Guest guest
I thought the reason of the Pump was to get rid of having to take more Meds oral, that the all you needed was the Meds from the Pump ? So when you get your Pump refilled you have to pay for Dr. visit and the Meds they put in the Pump plus the cost of your Break-thru Meds! This seems like alot of hasle and the cost is more than just taking your Meds oral. It sounds like to much for what you get out of it. Can anyone tell me thr Pro's about the Pump ? > > I HAVE BEEN TAKING MEDS FOR ABOUT 10 YEARS NOW....AND YOU JUST HAVE TO PLAY > AROUND WITH THE DOSAGE WITH THE DR UNTIL YOU GET SOME RELIEF. > > FOR BREAKTHROUGH PAIN I TAKE DILAUDID 4 MGS EVERY 4-6 HOURS AS NEEDED. Guest guest
I don't know that Dilaudid would help me or not. When I get it IV, it doesn't do anything for me but I also know that at least my body will respond differently to a medication if it is IV or oral In a message dated 8/3/2008 12:59:20 A.M. Guest guest
EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT, SWEETIE...YOU KNOW....EVERYONE'S BODY REPSONDS DIFFERENTLY TO ALL KINDS AND TYPES OF MEDS. I DO KINOW THAT DILAUDID IS A MAJOR PAIN MED AND DOES HELP ME WITH THE BREAKTRHOUGH PAIN. I USED TO TAKE OXYCONTIN...BUT COULDN'T TOLERATE IT ANY LONGER AFTER ABOUT 2 YEARS...SO I WAS SWITCHED TO METHADONE...AS THEY ARE USING THAT MORE FREQUENTLY NOW FOR CHRONIC PAIN THAN IN THE PAST WHEN IT WAS MOSTLY USED FOR ADDICTS. OF COURSE PEOPLE AT THE PHARMACY (PATRONS) WHO MAY OVERHEAR A CONVERSATION BETWEEN THE RX AND MYSELF SOME OTHER FOLKS LOOK AT ME LIKE..DRUGGIE! IT CRACKS ME UP NOW..IT USED TO GET ME MAD, BUT NOW IS JUST SEE THEIR IGNORANCE AND FIND IT COMICAL. HAVE YOU EVER TRIED THE MED CALLED LYRICAL? MY PAIN DR TREID ME ON IT AND IT DID NOTHING FOR MY RSD....BUT THERE ARE QUITE A FEW RSD PATIENTS WHO HAVE BEEN GREATLY HELPED WITH IT IN HIS PRACTICE ALONE....MAYBE THAT MIGHT HELP YOU OR ANYONE ELSE... ANOTHER THOUGHT ABOUT THE PUMP I HAD WHEN I SIGNED OFF EARLIER IS THAT WITH THE PILLS...YOU HAVE TO KEEP ON TAKING THEM..AND GOD FORBID IF YOU MISS A DOSE...I THINK WE ALL KNOW HOW WE FEEL WHEN THAT HAPPENS...WITH THE PUMP IS A CONSTANT FLOW OF MEDS...WHICH IS JUST ANOTHER PLUS. IF I COULD GET ANOTHER ONE....I MIGHT THINK OF DOING IT... I AM GOING TO LOOK INTO ANS SINCE I HAD SUCH A BAD EXPERIENCE WITH MEDTRONIC. BUT LIKE I SAID BEFORE, JENN, PLEASE DON'T LET THAT DETER YOU FROM HAVING IT DONE THERE ARE SO MANY FOLKS WITH GREAT EXPERIENCES WITH IT. I HOPE SOME OF THIS HELPS YOU OUT, JENN! HOW ARE THINGS ....EVERYTHING OK? LOTS OF GENTLE HUGS TO ALL, KATHY G. **************Looking for a car that's sporty, fun and fits in your budget? Read reviews on AOL Autos. Guest guest
You asked what the pros are to the pump. I have had a pump since 1992. I have had it replaced 3 times, the last time being this past Oct. I now have to have my pump refilled approx. every 4 months. I am receiving Fentanyl and Marcaine through my pump. I am on a much lower dosage of meds than I would be if I were taking them orally. Also, the pain relief is constant, unlike taking an oral med which relieves your pain following a oral dose which then builds again as that pill wears off only to be followed again by another pill. I do have Vicodin to take for break-thru pain. I average approx. 1-2 pills per month. Most episodes of discomfort can be controlled with the use of Aleve or Tylenol. There are times when I have to take the Vicodin more frequently but in all these years I have never found it necessary to take more than 25 in a month and that has been extremely rare. For the most part I would say that my pain levels average between a 1 and a 3 and that is 24/7. So, when you ask if it is worth the price, I would say a definite YES. Guest guest
Thank you Dorothy for that infromation, I am so tired at looking at the clock and seeing if it's time for another Dose and having that up and down with your Pain level. Plus I am getting realy up there on my dose of Pain Meds which I don't like. Thank You > > You asked what the pros are to the pump. I have had a pump since 1992.
