Guest guest
Hi There, My surgeon told me that bizarre as it seems, the cholesteatoma itself actually can conduct hearing when the bone(s) is/are missing, because it bridges the gap that the bones normally bridge. Therefore, the conductive hearing is lost after surgery because the conductor (tumor) is now gone. This is what happened to me. Oddly enough, just after the surgery, I could hear better but that was because the gel packing that was in my ear canal was temporarily conducting my hearing. Then, that dissipated and I can barely hear anything out of my surgery ear now. Reconstruction surgery is scheduled for October, hoping for the best. Good luck with your surgery and try to take care of yourself, Take care, Melody Isley <lisa_isley@...> wrote: The reason some of us without the bones and eardrum can still hear is because we still have a good cochlea on that side. Your cochlea is the "end organ of hearing", meaning that the bones and eardrum just help conduct the sound to the inner ear. Good luck with everything and we're glad you're here -- there are a lot of people with different experiences here and I hope we can all help in some way. Take care, S_princess1 <s_princess1@...> wrote: I'm the usual million and one ear infections, perferated ear drumblah, blah, blah. The first tympanoplasty failed and my old ENT toldme there was nothing anyone could do so after years of follow up andbeing told all wass lost with my ear i stopped going. That was inhigh school, now that i'm twenty six i had a real bad infection thatwouldn't go away and was fortunately referred to an otologist who toldme that he could help. I went to my pre-opt. appointment today andwas told that my CT scan showed an ear that he would have expected tosee on a person from a third world country who had never had medicalattention in their life!! He said that it was horrible with a capitalH. I have no ear drum, my C-toma has eaten all three of my hearingbones and ate right through my mastoid, he said that the mastoid isliterally in two pieces and he showed me the pieces on the CT!!! Soi'm scheduled for a tympanoplasty and mastoidectomy a week from Wed.and to tell everyone the truth i'm scaredd to death. I remember thelast surgery all too well, and although not well, i CAN still hear outof that ear. No one knows why i hear but the fact is i do hear and amscared to death to lose anymore hearing in that ear. I read inanother message that i will lose all conductive hearing after themastoidectomy, what does that mean? Now my doctor said that he willbe able to restore my hearing bones with prosthetics and that i willbe able to hear better after the surgery but he said nothing aboutconductive hearing deafness. I would love to hear advice or answers! I am from Michigan and dofeel confident in the Doctor, however, I still believe in words fromthose who've been there and done that speak louder than Doc's!!
