The non-walking stress test uses a drug called Adenosine. It speeds up the

heart as if one was walking on a treadmill. It is used for people with

walking problems or other low-mobility patients. It does not mimic cardiac

arrest, though, it is done here (WI) with a cardiologist, nurse and " crash

cart " present. The stress test uses an ECG to assess rhythm and heart

electrical conduction changes.

Sometimes the stress test is also done with Thallium or Cardiolite or other

isotopes that, when injected IV, are absorbed by the heart muscle and show up

with a scan device. It gives good info on how the heart is receiving

circulation, oxygen, etc., can pinpoint areas of the heart that don't do so

good.

Did your doctor say the stress test was to be done on the threadmill or if it is the thalium stress? I do not see them having you "run" on the threadmill. If it is the thalium stress you will be laying on the table and you will be monitored very carefully. Good luck on your test.

Stress Tests

Last week It has been 4 years since I got my ICD. My EPS guy says I might get another 1 to 1 1/2 years out of it. He wants to do a stress test and it is freaking me out. Mind you last time i was taking the stress test i got in to a VT which was 12 years ago. Since then nothing maybe couple of non sustained ones except when i changed my meds after I got my ICD for about 3 months and I got shocked during that time after that nothing but I am terrified. My eps guy says he'll be there but that does not change the fact that, if i get into VT while I am running on that treadmill, even if he is there I will be shocked. It took me a long time to recover from the shocks and i don't want to get in to that paranoia again. Can some of you share your Stress Test experiences with me please. Thanks. Love TURK

PS: In the mean time, I hope everyone is OK and all is well.

Both of my docs are giving me the choice. My Card. Doc said I don't have to run on the treadmill and they can do it with meds he said. I am not sure what to do. Can they do the thalium test while I am under and what is it about?Gail & <charade799@...> wrote:

Also there is one difference since i last wrote to you guys. I have been on 40 mg's of lasix and potassium everyday and since I started no sign of HF. I have been walking with a very fast pace and no running out of breath anymore. I have been feelling fantastic. The only thing I have a problem with is the No salt diet but I can deal with that. Thanks for answering so fast hon. Love TURKGail & <charade799@...> wrote:

Turk,

Have

had my own set of problems with stress tests but mine were dobutamine stress

echocardiograms where you lay on table, given iv and meds put in that stress

the heart. gave me heart attack which I recently had triple bypass

and trying to recover…….someone shouldda warned me that open heart

was so rough to get through (lol) like I woulda had a choice eh? Anyway

Turk, they can have a tech there to turn off your icd so you wont get shocked

but have externals ready just in case. They can also shut it down temporarily

by placing the big magnet over your icd….. that’s what they

do with my stress tests but I have icd for ayrrithmias and I don’t know

how that differs from your condition. Good luck hon,

Debbie

Turk,

Thallium is a drug & dye they

give IV while you are awake that increases your heart rate as if you were

running. They scan as it flows so they can also eval the structures.

I had one. The techs were more nervous than I was. They knew my

settings on my ICD and stopped when I started getting close.

Turk...I just wanted to let you know that I have had 4 thalium stress tests--they won't even let me near the treadmill because I too have gone into VT while walking!!! The thalium is a more controlled environment, I actually felt pretty safe when I was having mine.

I experienced a "burning " sensation in my chest that alarmed me...I don't know if this is common. The techs told me that I would feel a warm tingeling radiate from my chest out. I was frightened because it wasn't warm (it was hot) and it didn't tingle (it burned). It gradually went away and by the time I left I felt completely normal again. So, as far as cardiac tests go it was fairly simple.

Let us know how it goes...we'll be thinking of you! You all have been in my thoughts--today isn't a good one for me...I just got up to check my e-mail...headed back to bed..my CHF is flaring up, has been since I am trying to work. But it's always a comfort for me to hear from you all--I don't feel so isolated or alone. I thank God for this group, you are all a blessing...

Take care!

Love,

No you will not be under. But you will have the best of care and will not really feel anything. has the thalium test and he does feel his heart work as if he is on the treadmill, but he would take the thalium over the treadmill any day.
