Reiter's?

Rib and sternum pain is usually referred to as chostochondritis. It is

inflammation of the tiny joints in the rib cage and of the sternum. It is a

very common complaint of those with Reiters Syndrome (RS), aka ReActive

Arthritis.

Sometimes the pain can be incredible, especially if the sternum is inflammed and

swollen, at least for me. For years every time I complained of chest pain I was

shipped off to the emergency room to rule out a heart attack. My doctors

finally listened to me regarding the RS/ReA diagnosis and quit sending me,

especially since the pain is on the outside of the rib cage and can be 'felt',

i.e., the painful point fingered.

Twisting the rib cage, sudden moves, lying on the rib cage, etc., all can elicit

a painful moment. Even deep breathing can result in pain, when the

chostochondritis is active.

I've found heat to be helpful for the pain, whether in the form of a heating pad

or a very hot bath. Vioxx and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs

(NSAIDs) can reduce the pain and the inflammation.

The cause of this problem, like so many associated with RS/ReA is an

inflammatory response going on in the cartilage of the tendons, especially at

the insertion points into bone or muscle. Aren't we lucky.

HI

I have rib pain quite often. My Rheumy says it is the connective tissue not

the actual ribs. Very painful. Can't stand for my hubby to put his arm

around me at night when I have it. Also makes wearing a bra very difficult.

  • 1 year later...

My costo was surgically induced and it still is with me if I do too much or

in doing things like cleaning the bath tub the wrong way. I have found

nothing but knockout drops or the tea from a group in South Africa which

seems to help tremendously. I lost the group in a move when my laptop died

and I lost all of my addresses. Looks like I would have learned about

backing up my address book by now, doesn't it?(Just a tip for the rest of

you who might not back up things which need to be kept. Right now I am

needing to back up my Blackberry but putting it off daily.. I have 2 cell

phones which need to be backed up now and there they sit looking ar me.)

One of the problems with backing up is that once I get started I don't have

sense enough to stop, which makes me put it off even more.

back up my Blackberry

I am really losing ground here. The last time I heard about blackberries, was

when we take walks in the woods with tin cans and try to be the one who

picks the most blackberries before the bears get them! Now I hear we have to

" back up " our blackberries? I have tried to keep up with the high tech

gadgets...but since the music diggy came out (forgot what it is called now) I

gave up.

I still have dial up...while everybody I know has broadband or wireless. Old

foggy here is getting even foggier.....and it really is showing in my posts,

sorry about that friends. Something I found out...you can't depend on " spell

check " ....for errors.....either made by mistake or just plain because i

can't see to correct what is there! At least the ole timers disease hasn't

completely got me....or if it has....I don't know it yet. teehee.
