Guest guest
Well, the yolk contains all of the fat (5 grams; 1.5 saturated) and most of the calories (55-60 for a large egg vs. 15 cals for the white). And it's not true that the yolk has more protein; a large egg contains about 6-7 grams of the protein, 3 of them in the yolk and 3-4 in the white. The yolk also contains all of the cholesterol (200 milligrams). It's fine to eat a yolk scrambled with your whites every once in a while, but most people don't want all that added fat, esp. because the white is so rich in protein. Think about it: You can scramble TEN egg whites for a mere 150 calories, 0 fat and 40 grams of protein. If you scrambled ten egg yolks, you'd get 600 calories and 50 grams (!) of fat with no more protein than you get in the whites. Hope this helps. Guest guest
Good advice Dani. We buy about three to four dozen eggs a week. Cheap protein, Wal Mart has them for 68 cents a doz. Of this I will scramble 8 eggs but only one or two yolks for the purpose of coloring. If I am eating boiled eggs I'll toss all the yolks tho. Guest guest
Stasia! 68 cents a dozen!!! WOW! I pay a minimum of $1.39 for regular sized eggs up to $1.99 for jumbo - what size are the ones you get for 68 cents? Rita Re: Egg Yolks Good advice Dani. We buy about three to four dozen eggs a week. Guest guest
Also, the protein found in egg yolks is more bioavailable than the protein in egg whites. Egg white protein is already pretty darn good, but the protein in the yolks is awesome. Yolks also have lecithin and other good stuff. However, due to the fat content, I don't eat more than one yolk a day. I usually hard-boil a carton of eggs, and have one whole egg and two egg whites with a piece of fruit for a mid-morning meal. -M > The yolk isn't pure fat. Guest guest
Another thing you can do with them if you can't bear to throw them out is put in a bowl and microwave till they are hard. Then crumble them up and put on the bird feeder. The birds are so dumb they don't know it's eggs and eat it right up. So do other wildlife. This really works well in the winter when food is scarce. At Wal Mart a dozen eggs are 79 cents so I just trash the yolks. Stasia
Guest guest
<<I'm just wondering why we can't have egg yolks>> 1 egg yolk = 5 grams of fat(of which 1.6 grams is saturated fat the bad kind of fat for you)/60 calories/5 grams protein/0 carbs 1 egg white = 0 fat/15 calories/4 grams protein/0 carbs Quite a difference eh? :-) The above from the alpha listing at: http://www.ntwrks.com/~mikev/chart1a.htm <<joni>> *choice choices choices - its all about making better healthier choices*
Guest guest
You can still have a couple of the deviled eggs, just don't overdo. Stasia
Guest guest
Most people eat 1 whole egg plus 3-5 additional whites. Most of the protein is in the white, but most of the flavor and calories (and fat) are in the yolk. If you eat only whole eggs, the calories get too high before you get enough protein. Here's an article with egg nutrition stats. One whole egg has 6g protein. One white has 3.5g protein. People usually shoot for around 20-25g of protein per meal. A few yolks won't kill you, it's just that the calories add up fast. http://www.cnn.com/HEALTH/9904/20/egg.aday/ Egg Yolks so I'm just wondering why we can't have egg yolks. I just made deviled eggs for tomorrow and then realized that I can't have them. Is it really that bad? By the way, I so love this program!!! I'm even looking forward to my workout tomorrow. yayayayayay. Talk more later. bec
Guest guest
Hi to everyone, I have been totally compliant to the O diet for 5 or 6 weeks now. I'm feeling GOOD, losing weight and thinking I will be able to do this from now on. (I'm 62, so I MUST.) I eat on average 7 or 8 eggs each day, but I eat only two of the yolks. My husband, an A who hates to see anything go to waste, adds two more whole eggs to my yolks and consumes the entire thing. (He, unlike me, does not need to lose weight.) Will all these yolks be in any way harmful to him in the long run? Thanks for your help, Pat in WI
Guest guest
Hi, I'm new here and have just been lurking for a couple of days but thought I'd join in here. I give the egg yolks to my dogs with their food - makes their coats nice and glossy. Six large egg whites have 21g of protein. If you're going to mix yolks and whites, most people have 1 whole egg plus an additional 4-5 whites (20-24g protein). I just pitch any yolks I don't use. Although, I'm sure there are more crafty types on the board who have found some use for them?
