That would be 31oz - 8oz = 56gr

amount of protein

Now I'm really confused. I have read over and over about the need

for eating high protein, and guess I have made assumptions about

that. Then I have read here about eating one gram of protein per

body weight per day.

Well, I converted 220 grams to ounces and got 8 oz. Did I do this

wrong? I eat much more than 8 ounces of protein a day. 8 oz does

not seem like a lot to me....is it that my portions must be way

off? I eat at least 4-6 ounces of protein at a time, for lunch and

dinner certainly, then add some eggs for breakfast and some protein

snacks, and now it seems like I'm eating too much protein!!! (I

guess I'll go back to Dr D's books and read up, I must have missed

something.)

You're confusing protein rich foods with the protein itself. Eat one gram of

protein per pound of body weight refers to the protein itself. For example, 4

ounces of beef contains 20-27 grams of protein. You need to look at a table of

food composition to find out how much actual protein (or other nutrients) are in

each food you are interested in.

take 220 (my weight), divide by 7, and get 31 grams of protein per

day? Wow, that IS a lot. Just out of curiosity...what conversion

is the 1 to 7, since it doesn't seem to be the standard metric

conversion I know. (or think I know ;).

If you are trying to eat 220gr of protein (1gr/lb) then you would eat 31

oz of animal protein a day.

31oz x 7 gr = 220 grams of protein (217 gr to be exact)

1 oz of meat/chicken/turkey etc. contains 7 grams of protein. 1 whole

egg contains 7 gr of protein

1 can of tuna contains about 33 gr of protein, so you'd eat 6 cans a day

to get the required amount of protein for someone that weighs 220lbs.

This should make it clear :-)

and ,

Thank you so much for the clarification. My goodness, this is a new

concept for me I hadn't thought about...the idea that a piece of

meat in weight is not equal to its grams of protein. I guess I was

thinking meat=protein exclusively (ignoring the fat, etc). I

clearly have a really big hole in my nutrition knowledge...so glad

I'm here for you to help!

So now when you all write that a LOT of protein is important, I know

what you mean. Actually, I'm pretty close to it...I've always been

a really big animal protein eater. Now I just have to balance it

with more green veggies, increase beneficials and avoid avoids :-)
