I always thought muskmelon *was* cantaloupe.

Cantaloupe vs Musk Melon

OK, Muskmelon is neutral and cantaloupe is an avoid (because of

mold--intestinal imbalance). How can you tell the difference at the store?

They sure

don't know.

LOL--the trouble is that since it's all labeled cantalope here I don't know

whether I've been eating cantalope or musk mellon so I don't know what " big "

means. Is there no other difference? Surely they look different in some way.

I still am confused about the musk melon food list entry. Here is

some information I copied from a horticulture site and the reason why

I am confused:

" The most popular type of muskmelon in America is the small, oval,

heavily netted kind commonly called a cantaloupe. All cantaloupes are

muskmelons, but not all muskmelons are cantaloupes.

Muskmelons have a wide range of other forms, sizes, and flesh

qualities, such as the Honey Dew, Casaba, and Persian types; the

large Bender, Montreal, and such odd varieties as the elongated

Banana should not be called " cantaloupes. "

If all cantaloupes are muskmelons and cantaloupes are an avoid for Os

then why are musk melons listed as neutral in TYPEbase 3?

I think I will stick to the known neutral melon types.

All squares are rectangles but not all rectangles are squares.

Think of cantaloupe as a subclass of muskmelon.

LOL--the trouble is that ER4YT is saying that squares are OK but rectangles

are an avoid. I've also found out that there are several different types of

cantaloupes. This is getting ugly enough to make a train take a dirt

road.--LOL.

From the European that posted, it sounds like I had it

backwards - or not quite since she said what we call cantaloupe

is actually a muskmelon. I just wish I knew for sure which one

(are rocky ford cantaloupes really cantaloupes or muskmelons) was

which. I really like rocky fords, but am avoiding them to be

safe right now.

Growing your own would certainly solve the problem.

The Green Grocer spot on CBS today had Muskmelons (from Australia). He

showed how the Muskmelons had green defined lines top to bottom that

allowed one to cut out a slice at a time. Beautiful color inside. To

me they didn't look as small and round as ones I see at the grocer.

Will have to look around to see if I can find what the Green Grocer on

CBS in Sacramento, CA had today.

Big is 8 - 10 " in diameter and more than 5 lbs. They are huge. The surface is

rougher than a cantaloupe. We can only buy them at a farmer's market, they are

not available at a grocery store.

I will look up here for seeds in a package and send them to you if you want. I

can't guarantee I will still find them this late in the year but will try.

E-mail me directly.

I saw some " Tuscan Cantaloupe " at Target... they are a little larger and

have lobes with green lines running between them, where you would slice

them. Are these muskmelons? I remember 'cantaloupes' looking like that

when I was a kid, then they got smaller, rounder, more boring, less sweet; I

wonder if growers changed species at some point, or if I'm just nostalgic.

Bought a lovely crenshaw instead, just got the one with the stem end a

little less firm than the others & it was delicious.

The " Tuscan Cantaloupe " is like the one the Green Grocer on Ch 13 said

was a Musk melon. I found one like that at an Italian Grocery last

week. It was $2.89 where the other " round " cantaloupes were much less

and also different in appearance. The one I tried was wonderful.

Haven't found any at the other markets though including the Farmer's

market.

Super Target surprises me sometimes. I went for the organic omega-3 eggs

they used to have, and was disappointed by their disappearance but happy

with the melons. Their meat department is miniscule though, and long gone

is the fresh trout I used to go there for.
