Guest guest
Hi Liz, I was just approved for the remicade treatments. I was trying to hold out because we will have to pay 5,000.00 ourselves. I saw my rheumatologist Monday and he says I am very sick and need to have them done. My sed rate is 60: C-Reactive Protein is 2.9, and he says that I am very anemic. I do wake up every morning with pain and swelling in a new area. I also have crohns disease and he feels remicade and methotrexate together would be good for crohns too. He is sure that if I don't have the effusions, I will be needing more joint replacements. I am 39 with 2 kids and have had a total knee replacement in 2002. I guess my question is are you feeling better yet, or worse. I know some medications you have to get through the bad until you reach the good. If you or anyone else has any info on their experience I would greatly appreciate it Thank You, Diane. PS, have you gotten sick to your stomach at all?

PS, have you gotten sick to > your stomach at all? The very first day I had an infusion I went to the hospital library afterwards to use the computer. I was typing away not thinking of anything specific when i suddenly realized my hands didn't hurt at ALL. I was shocked as I hadn't been expecting any relief for a while. Relief for my spine did not show up till after the third treatment. I had JUST finally talked my dr into getting a TENS unit.. I had to practically crawl on my knees to get her to agree. But just right afater that my back quit hurting. It had bdeen to the point it felt like my spinal column was collapsing when I was walking and I was ready to quit my ER volunteer job. I haven't had any more trouble till just this last week.. i think it is because my dosage is wearing off.... Also my fatigue level got a lot better during this treatment. I had gotten so I had to take the electric cart around Walmart... Symptom wise.. No never been sick to my stomach. Sometimes I get a slight headache right between my eyes. Really mild though. The last time I had it, the next day I felt a little..I can't explain it.. like I was coming down with something..just tired and weakish or something. But that didn't continue at all. One thing I really have noticed is that sores and scratches (which I get a lot having a herd of kitties) do not heal fast at all.. it took 3 months for one to heal. It makes me worried that something worse could happen and would not have immune system support to fight it off.... and I can't have surgery without major problems.. I have a question for the group too.. Do you think I am safe volunteering in a classroom with a lot of kids who could have colds and flu and stuff? I haven't really had trouble at the ER cus most of those people are there for heart problems or injuries and are adults. Liz ~~~ " Mistakes are the portals of discovery. Guest guest
Hi Liz, I would not quit your volunteer job with kids. You should, however, wash your hands often, use the antiseptic hand cleaner, get your annual flu and pneumonia shots when available, etc. I taught school for 30 years and was okay using these techniques. I also never opened a door with my hands. I used my forarms. Sounds stupid, but just think of all the germs on those doors! I have AS and have had both knees and a hip replaced. Hope you feel better! Guest guest
Hello Bob, I hope you don't mind my asking, but what were you diagnosed with and what are your symptoms? I am interested in Remicade and need all the information I can get. Sincerely, Harv 47, ReA 23 years
Guest guest
Diane, I have been receiving Remmy treatments for over a year. The only side effect was one experience with a migraine during the infusion. The infusion rate was slowed and a dose of tylenol administered and I was OK. The long and short of it I have had no major flares in over a year and have become active again (being mindful of the condition). Quality of life has been resored for a intentive purposes due to the treatments.Hope you have positive results. I was into my second infusion before i actually was able to discern significant results. All the best. Guest guest
Harv, No I don't mind. I was diagnosed about 10 years ago with Rieters Syndrome. I had spent approx. 20 years in the Canadian Military with recurring symptoms of rashes (hands and feet followed by severe desquamation -peeling), fever, intestinal symptoms (stomach flu), iritis, and ongoing aches and pains in the lower back and feet. I was released with a medical condition attributed to a non specific spondiolitis(spelling). It was five years after my release that I was finally diagnosed with Rieters. My disease was traced back to a tour in Lebanon in 1982 when I was suffered a series of gut infections. Over the last five years my Reiters continually worsened to the point I thought I would become incapacitated. I was on the complete gamut of NSAIDS and DMARDS. I was excepted into a trial for Remicaide a little over a year ago. I was a little apprehensive at first but figured " what the hey " I'll go for it as I figured I would only get progressively worse. I have had steady improvement since I started on Remicaide. My Remicaid is covered by Veterans Affairs Canada as the Reiters was attributable to an operational deployment. In that sense I'm very fortunate as I would shudder to think at the cost if it was not covered. My medical plan does not cover the cost. Well enough ramblings should you require additional info let me know and I'll try my best to help you out. Bob Buist ReA 10 years + or - 47 yrs.
