Guest guest
I am anxious to learn more about this. Up until lately I was consuming up 1/4 c. of flax seed in my shakes. As far as I know my thyroid is ok, however not my adrenals. I thought I was doing something good. I did reduce that to 2-3 T about a week ago. Anyone with infor on this? MC Flaxseed Overdose I was just reading the book " The Omega-3 Connection " by L. Stoll, M.D., that I got from the library a few days ago, and it recommends not consuming more than 2 to 3 Tbsp. of flaxseed or flaxmeal per day because the seed husks contain naturally occurring cyanogenic nitrates and linamarin, which can be toxic in higher doses. The cyanogenic nitrates interfere with the thyroid gland's ability to take up iodine and may lead to goiter or other thyroid problems. Immature seeds contain higher amounts of cyanogenic nitrates and glucosides and are more dangerous. Flaxseeds also contain lignans, which have mild estrogenic, antiestrogenic, and steroidlike activity. These problems are not present with flaxseed oil. Makes me wonder if I should stop using flaxseed completely until my thyroid and adrenal functions return to normal? Comments or thoughts? Guest guest
Don, I also have a thyroid problem, and stopped using flaxseed for that reason. I get my Omega-3 oils from fish oil...Carlson's cod liver oil to be precise. Guest guest
Isn't Fucus V. the thing to have for thyroid problems, not Omega-3 oils. Guest guest
Gaye, I stopped depending on flaxseed to balance my Omega-6/3 ratio..NOT to correct my thyroid function...just to not make it worse. That's the same reason that I avoid eating broccoli (O-Beneficial) and other goitertropic vegetables...I don't need to negate all the things I do to help my hypothyroidism, like Fucus Vesiculosus, etc. which help with this condition. Bear in mind, as Dr. D has said many times, this diet is a guide, and individual needs will sometimes require modification..one might need more of a particular Neutral food, or needs to not eat a particular Beneficial food. My B daughter loves lamb (Beneficial for Bs), but she gets an upset stomach whenever she eats it, therefore, no lamb for her! Likewise, broccoli would be beneficial for me if I were not hypothyroid! Hope this clears up the confusion. Jannette PS. Kathy...cod Liver Oil is NOT primarily Vitamin s A & D... please research this. It is the second highest source of DHA and EPA (4.8gms./tbsp) compared to flaxseed oil (3.0gms/tbsp) - Salmon oil has 5.6gms/tbsp (I use this in the late spring thru early fall if I'm well enough to be outside a lot). The Vit. D in cod liver oil is important if one does not get adequate sun exposure - especially if one is dark pigmented...we then need much more sunshine than fair-skinned persons for our bodies to manufacture sufficient Vit.D. BTW, our O diets have much of the foods supplemented with Vit. D on the Avoid list; so supplementation of this vitamin is particularly important. Guest guest
Yes, according to Dr. D'Adamo Bladderwrack is supposed to help stabalize thyroid function. The concern I raised is if consuming too much flaxseed, or maybe any at all, could inhibit proper thyroid function. I currently have some combination of adrenal and thyroid problem. I was consuming 1-2 Tbsp. of soaked ground flaxseed evey morning. However, after reading the information about flaxseed I have stopped. I will probably not resume until my thyroid function returns to normal. I do wnat to make clear that consuming the flaxseed did not cause my problem. I started using flaxseed after I identified my problem. Flaxseed is a source of omega-3 essential fatty acids (EFAs). Since EFA's are still important instead of using flaxseed one can shift to flaxseed oil or fish oil. Don > > > I also have a thyroid problem, and stopped using flaxseed for that > reason.
