Jacinta

Portugal, AS, 44, single proud mom of two teens

You can go one without cigarettes Jacinta. We pray about that lump under your

arm. As for your head, being a proud mom of two teens can cause headaches. I

was a proud father of two teens at one point in my life. It took me extra time

in prayer and keeping one step ahead of them but it was worth it.

Marty....I am actually going to go to a hypnotist on Sunday to try and quit. I

am ready and hope that it works. They say that tobacco is part of the whole

" night shade " plants that can put you into a " flare-up " if you take too much. I

am not sure if I believe all of that but I am ready to quit smoking. I know it

is only hurting me and I really cannot stand any more hurt......if you know what

I mean.

Hi Marty

It is coming up one year. I can't use the gum, patches, or anything like that

as I am allergic to the form of nicotine they put in the patches and stuff. I

tried that years ago and ended up with my heart doing the cha cha and pretty

reddish purple welts all over my tiny body (tiny at that time).

The first time I quit smoking I stayed off them for over 10 years. Just tossed

a brand new carton of cigarettes in the wood stove in the kitchen and that was

it. Unfortunately I married a smoke stack and it turned out very bad for my

health in more ways than one. A buddy gave me a cigarette to calm me down and

that was it until last year.

I had however changed from cigarettes to my pipe in January 2001 and kept it at

one pack of tobacco per 7 days. Tobacco packs have the same amount of tobacco

in them as a pack of cigarettes and I went from a pack and a half of cigarettes

a day to the one pack of pipe tobacco per week. That made it easier. Also

helping was my wife Hazel who never really smoked and I did not smoke anywhere

in the house except the family room which has a fireplace and chimney. That

kept the smoke downstairs or outside. Then I just started tapering off, not

taking my pipe with me when I drove into the city, not taking it on walks and

such then just said one morning, that's it, no more.

I have been quite concerned that I may have quit too late because of my sore

throat that started at the end of July and is still with me. Thank goodness

that it was not cancer though.

Each person has to find what method of quitting or the decision to quit and then

stick to it. It is not easy, there are days when I get so frustrated with

something that I feel like a puff or two, but I know it is not in my best

interests to get back to it.

However, as long as tobacco is a legal product and the government receives taxes

from the sale of tobacco and tobacco products then they should stop trying to

close down smoking from the back door rather than making it illegal. It makes a

double standard. What they also do not want you to know is that the government

gets enough money in the so called " sin " taxes to cover the " real " cost of

medical care they blame on cigarettes and booze.

I find it odd that the same government that supplied me with a carton of

cigarettes for Christmas and my Birthday is now really hitting the smokers.

Also the money they got from taxes and gave it away as subsidies to help farmers

grow tobacco back in the 50's and 60's.

My only wish is that governments around the world would declare a moratorium on

wars and inhumane treatment of their own citizens and put the resources they are

wasting into medical research.

Someone asked it there was a cure for AS. Nope and it has been around since at

least Ramases II of Egyptian fame. AS and arthritic conditions were found on

his mummy. And believe me there are many jokes surrounding mummies and I think

I had better shut up now.

Blessings

Hi Folks,

After smoking for 30 years, 3 years ago I quit, the day before I had

triple by-pass surgery. I don't know how I could face the surgeon who worked so

hard on me, if I went back to the cigs. I don't cringe when my doctor tells me

to take a deep breath. Harv

Hi Harv.

I praise God for answered prayer in your case. Having to have heart bypass

surgery is not simple even for one bypass but risks for repeated problems are

better with a Quadrupal Bypass.

We pray for continued recovery and for breakthrough's in the treatment of the

Spondy's. As my learned doctor said to me at one time, I have nothing wrong

with me that a body transplant would not fix.
