Sorry about my mistake on Maxidex. Maxidex eye drops does seem to be 6 times

more potent than prednisolone eye drops. I got it mixed up with lotemax which

is not as strong as prednisolone. And Maxidex is also in suspension. So Pred

Forte isn't the only one in suspension. (Boy, you do have to be up dated

constantly and the dates on web sites really do make a difference.)

According to some, long term use can have more side effects than the Pred

forte (which has enough of it's own as I can attest to.), but if the uveitis

is bad, maybe it is a lifesaver (not really lifesaver, just an eye saver :-)

drug to use? I have a very chronic form of uveitis, but it is controlled with

3 daily drops of Pred Forte. I have not been able to cut down the dosage for

almost 2 years. I do have IOP problems, which is controlled by drops.

Like , I would like to know more about this drug for iritis. If anyone

has been given maxidex for their iritis, please let us know more about it.

I do not have chronic iritis but I get it every second year or so and

usually quite an awful dose requiring me to wear dark glasses even in

winter because I cannot stand light at all. I have persistent AS

problems and never had remission. Maxidex, a steroid suspension, has

been the first choice prescription given to me on each occasion. Even

when I had Iritis in both eyes four years ago, I was prescribed with

Maxidex. On each occasion I usually start off by taking Maxidex hourly

and visiting the ER( eye clinic) each morning. Usually, after a couple

of days or so, I reduce ( under instruction) the application to every

two or three hours with a reduction in the required ER visits. As the

iritis gets better, the visits are reduced to a weekly basis with

applications approximately every four hours or so. All of the foregoing

depends on how bad the initial Iritis is in the first place. It is

normally prescribed with two other treatments: one is called Mydralite,

a solution ( sp?) and a cream which is applied at night-time before

going to bed. The cream has been the one variable of the treatments

I've had but the last one was Minitrol Ointment. When I have Iritis, it

normally lasts around 3 months and on all occasions I've been lucky that

it completely cleared-up. The last time was August to November, 2001.

For me the Iritis usually comes on over a period of a couple of days or

so. I've never been prescribed Predisnone. I hope this information is

of some use and my heartfelt sympathies to those of you who have chronic

Iritis. One day without reading is more than I can bear. The

manufacturers of Maxidex on the carton is Alcon-Couvreur,Belgium and

distributed by Alcon Laboratories, Hemel Hempsted, Hertfordshire, in the

UK.

Hi , nice to see you posting to the group again. Missed you. Thank you

so much for sharing about the Maxidex. From what I can gather reading from

other people...the Maxidex is very good for bad cases of iritis....like stage

3+/4+ and like you said, you have to tapper very slowly, slower than Pred

Forte. I wish they had the Maxidex back when I had acute flares of iritis.

They only treated it with Pred Forte every hour and that just wasn't strong

enough...but my eye wasn't bad enough to have an introcular(sp?)shot. BTW, I

had several of them. I remember my doctor saying it had a stronger steroid

which was mixed with something else for injection into the eye. I was scared

to death for my first eye shot...but if wasn't anything to fear...but fear

itself. I didn't feel anything. I think I'd just as soon get the eye shot as

a flu shot. If I had been treated with the Maxidex the few times my eyes

were at a 4+ reading, I might not have this slow, simmering chronic iritis I

have today. I started out like you, having a couple of iritis flares that

were treated and gone in three months or so. Now, I can't remember when I've

not had to treat my eye. I had a cateract implant a few years ago...and ever

since then I have had almost a constant flare (slow burning) which I pretty

much treat myself at home (with docs blessing) because he knows you have to

treat it right away because it can get very bad in just a few hours/or

overnight. I see the doctor every three weeks and he checks my IOP and uses

slit lamp and tells me to carry on what you have been doing. Every two weeks

we try to cut down on the pred ever so slowly....and my eye is so sensitive

to the Pred that it " knows " even if I miss two hours. If I let it go for two

more hours...I start hurting again, eye feels funny and gets blurry until I

use the dilating drops. I've almost given up the procedure...as it just

doesn't seem to be getting any better. Not any worse...but not any better,

either. Several years ago, I had a very bad case...that included the vetreous

(sp?) and things have not been like they used to be. Gosh, it is getting

really expensive for all the eye meds I have to take. I see no light at the

end of the tunnel. I've tried lotimax/inflamaze and some other stuff. So far

for me, the only think that does half way decent is Pred Forte...but I;m

certainly going to ask about the Maxidex. He may be afraid to give it to me

because of the IOP. More steroids, more trouble. Anyway, I'll get the scoop

on the differences and why they choose one drug over another. OK? Best to
