I have organic chocolate powder which goes in my am blender drink whenever I

feel like it. I also have stevia which I can handle. Also organic olive oil

which lubricates the bowel very nicely, as well as flax seed, ground. As an A,

my drink has soy milk, coffee, molasses (okay for O's too!). It's yummy and

part of my am routine that I look forward to!

Isn't there some sort of semi sweet chocolate that does conform to O's diet?

I intend to figure that out. No milk chocolate, but not all chocolate has

ilk in it. Right?

Argh! I am in complete agreement and sympathy with you.

I have had a difficult time with chocolate too. It has

so much stuff in it... the body is not quick to forget!

All I've been able to figure out is that in order to

make it gentle is to include the raw cacao (cocoa)

powder into some food so you get your chocolate fix.

I'm thinking that l-tyrosine supplementation could ease

the " O " mind into producing satisfying levels of certain

neurochemicals. would be able to extrapolate I'm

sure...

P.S. Argh!

Would the l-tyrosine ease cravings, then? Forgotten what I have read about this

amino acid, but half recall it also being good for us A's?

- I have found dark chocolate at my HFS that is ok for O

secretors. Made by " Chocolove " and very satisfying. I don't even feel I

have to eat the whole bar at once! Also found semi-sweet chocolate chips by

" Cloud Nine " that are ok.

,

If you're having that much trouble and your sticking to the diet, you're

probably lacking minerals. Take a chromium tablet or two in the morning.

It helps greatly. (I get the same cravings when I don't take my chromium or

minerals in general.

I found those Honey Mint Chocolates that only have honey, unsweetened

chocolate and peppermint. I've also found some bars at the local HFS

by Tropical Source. They are vegan, non-dairy, kosher, but you need

to read ingredients on the different flavors. If you're non-s, not

sure what you can do. Maybe try carob? Hang in there!

According to Dr D'Adamo mixing 500mg of Glutamine in a glass of water is helpful

for Os with a sweet tooth! He also suggests that 5-HTP is helpful for

depression, sleep problems, carbohydrate or food cravings or feeling generally

sluggish. Either on it's own or with the L-tyrosine which seems to be suggested

for reducing the effects of stress and fatigue. Dr D'Adamo's experience is that

L-tyrosine is helpful for type Os who have depression.

One caveat about 5-HTP, both from personal experience and from Dr D'Adamo has

said, if you are stressed then the 5-HTP will raise your cortisol levels thus

increasing your stress levels. Best thing I have found, thanks to Dr D'Adamo,

for stress is Rhodiola root extract (rhodiola rosea) also know as Arctic Root.

Along with a good B-Complex vitamin.

Yes, I got the " baking " chocolate, which is pure chocolate. But it's not

" chewy " , and it doesn't taste as good because it doesn't have all the " bad "

stuff in it.

5 days is not enough when the habit is of long standing!

Chocolate is a powerful substance and not that harmful in itself. There is a

book called " Why women need chocolate? " have not read for some time but it was

very interesting - all about the hormones etc. What I suggest is that you may

actually need some of those good chemicals that are in chocolate. You do not

need all the other stuff that is in tootsie rolls. I think you have to separate

out the need for chocolate fromt the habit and the need for sugar and perhaps a

craving for milk if it is in Tootsie rolls.

I had the same dilemma with diet coke - it is tremendously addictive for me. I

had to look at my reactions...Was I happy with " caffeine free " diet coke...the

answer was No so I knew that caffeine was part of the equation. Then I asked if

i could be happy substituting a high caffeine product - tea, green tea or

coffee. I found these helped (although coffee does not make me feel well) but

were not as satisfying and so I knew it was the combination of factors in the

diet coke.

Could you be satisfied with pure chocolate sweetened with molasses and mixed

with squash? I just bought some bakers chocolate and am going to experiment with

it.There was a great post on the main BB about making your own O ns bars with

choc and nuts fruit etc

As with diet coke, it is a struggle to break this habit - I found that I needed

to write down how I was feeling emotionally and treat it like a cigarette

addiction - don't buy any, stay away from places/situations where you formerly

ate TR's and substitute something else. For me, I went to having iced green tea

when I felt the urge for diet coke.

I think that I will always have to be watchful - I had got off the DC before and

let my head talk say that just one wouldn't hurt and was off to the races again.

That is the nature of addiction.

Do you think that you are using TR's because they make you feel happier - ie

have more serotonin? If so you might want to explore ways to raise serotonin

levels such as 5 HTP and exercise of course. Hope this helps! I really love

chocolate too and do believe that i need a bit of it at times....but since I

want to lose weight I have to limit those times.

Are you a nonnie? if not, then there are better forms of chocolate for you.

However, i find that if a food " calls me " that i am better to avoid it

completely. Ann

Thanks Axel, Very interesting for me too - I love chocolate and whenever I gave

up diet coke I would start to crave chocolate. I am off DC now - hopefully for

good and the cravings for chocolate are there. I am planning to get my choc fix

in as healthy a way as possible.

As for the l-tyrosine - I have tried a combination of l-tyrosine/l-glutamine and

it stimulates the thyroid and is not good except for short term. I can't say

that it helped cravings at all! My ND said it was not a good idea to be on it

for long. Food is the best answer always.

I am interested in what chemical it is that we are craving - dopamine? any other

way to raise dopamine levels? As serotonin goes up dopamine goes down usually I

have read.

Hi Steve, Interesting as always with you. Where did Dr.D mention about 5 HTP

raising cortisol levels? I know this can happen with tryptophan - it makes a

different conversion in the liver- but according to Murray in his book

on 5 HTP it does not happen with 5 htp.

It is certainly something for me to monitor.

Is the Rhodiola suitable for type A's? thanks Ann

Hi Ann,

" The Ask Dr. D'Adamo Question For 30 November 2000

5HT AND ABO BLOOD GROUPS

QUESTION: Is the mood enhancer 5-HTP safe for all blood types? Thanks for all

your great work ! The O diet has already done wonders for me in just two months

and I'm feeling better every day.

ANSWER: 5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is an amino acid that is the intermediate

step between tryptophan and the important brain chemical serotonin. There is a

considerable amount of evidence that suggests that low serotonin levels are a

common consequence of modern living. The lifestyle and dietary practices of many

people living in this stress-filled era results in lowered levels of serotonin

within the brain.

Personally, I tend to not recommend 5HTP for my type A or type B patients since

there are studies suggesting that 5HTP increases cortisol levels. (1) Cortisol

is an adrenal-derived stress hormone known to be produced in greater amounts

under stress by individuals who are type A or type B. In one study, blood group

B had the highest elevation in cortisol after provocation, followed by group A.

However, group A might be more at risk from elevated cortisol levels since their

levels rise almost as high as group B, but do not drop back down as low. (2,3) "

RHODIOLA

Useful reading: http://www.dadamo.com/ask/ask2.pl?20010604.txt

To answer your question it would appear that Ashwagandha is better for the

other blood types, Rhodila being best for Os.

" The Ask Dr. D'Adamo Question For 17 October 2001

<SNIP>

Ashwagandha is especially good stress remedy for group A's, and can also work

faily effectively in groups B and AB. Group O does better on Rhodiola-type

adaptogens which help modulate adrenaline release. "

Hope all that helps :-)

You might be craving the caffeine. There is a high amount of caffeine in

both Diet coke and chocolate.

Chocolate also contains a chemical - can't remember the name - that is the

same chemical our brains produce when we are in love. It gives us a

warm-fuzzy feeling. This is particularly why it is craved when you feel

down.

Take Magnesium if your body needs magnesium and not chocolate.

Hi all chocoholics out there - I've also heard chocolate has magnesium and

we crave it if we are low in magnesium, which most of us tend to be unless

we're supplementing.

phenylethylamine?

Yeah, more than one neuro-chemical though. It has

several chemicals that are similar enough to what our

own brains produce when in " love " .

phenylethylamine is also found in [drum roll]: marijuana!

No wonder why we all love it so much. Have tried L-Phenylalnine (different)

which is in diet coke but does not have same effect. It can be used for pain
