> Are you eating enough protein and exercise hard?

I was doing a great job in the summer - walking 6 out of 7 and swimming across

our little lake for about 50 minutes 2 or 3 x a week with my neighbor.

Then by mid Sept I becamse discouraged at lack of weight loss which I now

realize was because I was using bars and some shakes - both protein base but not

for an O ns.

So now I need to get back to a routine. I signed up at the y on thursday and

did a workout, swam 20 lengths and then went to Pilates. Thought I would be sore

but wasn't so need to get on with increasing the intensity.

I really am lazy....

Ann:

Here are some inspiring words.

I'm much worse off than you.

Two years ago I was told I was going to be in a wheelchair!

I used to jump horses, and was a competitive figure skater. My whole LIFE

was skating and horses. Two years ago, I broke my back - FROM MY NECK DOWN

TO MY TAILBONE. I've had three back surgeries, AND . . . I'm still

walking. I haved defied the odds, and continue to do so. I've been in

physical therapy for over a year now. I agree with the reference below

regarding getting FRESH AIR and NATURAL light (which I used to get every

week with the horses). If you look at my posts, you'll see, quite

frequently I asks questions about back pain, as I'm always looking for a

" miracle cure " . And in case anyone is wondering, prior to my back injury, I

HATED chocolate. Now, for some strange reason I'm hooked on tootsie rolls,

and . . . . yes, they (tootsie rolls) do make me feel better. Unfortunately,

they're an AVOID.

So, my friend, do what an " O " MUST do. Put on your coat, go outside and

DO something.

I'm going skating.

Best Wishes,

karen

statement about depression and fatigue)

Hi Taz, I hear you about the difficulty to get going on exercise - it

really does help to lift the mood. Also for us that live in Northern

climate, natural light is very important and so even if it is cold we should

be getting outdoors and walking. We need to take off our glasses or

contacts - If possible to still see! - and get some natural light on those

retinas.

Also my DH has SAD and we have bought a light for it and find that it helps.

Perhaps supplement vit D in the winter but make sure of your amount because

it can be toxic in too high amounts - it is also in ground flax I believe.

Maybe someone else can advise on this.

For me, if i get into a real blue funk as I did one March when my friend was

dying of cancer and we had not been able to get away, i went to the tanning

beds and oh how it raised my spirits after about 3 gentle sessions. I know

about the risks of tanning but there are benefits too - as always use your

own judgement and don't overdo.

Since i want to lose weight and get exercising more frequently why not both

of us post and encourage each other? Ann

Hi ,

I am increasing my protein - have to keep better track of what I do eat,

amount unknown. And the exercise is not much, walking a few times a week,

that is about it. I recently bought a home gym and now must discipline

myself to use it.

Depression and fatigue are such a trap - you don't have the energy or

motivation to do what you know will make you feel better! I am fighting

this though, the real motivation is that I do want to feel better (and

lose

about 30 pounds).

Thanks for asking the question and pointing me in the right direction

!

Thank you,

Taz

Hi Ann,

I am 54 years old. I went off Prempro in June so that I could lose weight.

Now I realize that it wasn't all estrogen's fault, I think there was a

metabolic shift about the same time as menopause. So at the end of August I

stopped eating my one piece of Ezekiel bread, no sweeteners, and began

drinking lots of water. I bought good running shoes, a new sweatshirt and

am now walking 2 miles 3-4 times a week, in addition to 1 mile 3 times a

week. The weight is coming off a pound or two a month. I am doing more

flax seed oil now and that might speed it up a bit. I am down to one fruit

a day, my treat for the week is a fruit smoothie.

It's tough but it's worth it!!

Sigh. I guess I thought just being on the correct eating program for me

would do it as far as losing weight goes. I lost 3 lbs. the first week

(must have been water), have been on the diet strictly and drinking lots of

water but exercise is a tough one for me as I have so little energy.

Anyway, actually gained a lb this past week. I haven't been watching carbs

at all, just trying to eat enough protein and the right carbs. It's

definitely too soon to be discouraged so I'll just keep with it and try to

get more active.

It's great to check the posts and hear everyone's experiences and tips.

Dear Ann,

I am unable to exercise due to the restraints of CFS, muscle does not repair

itself and lactic acid just builds up. Wish I could, my husband walks 2-3

times a day and I would love to join him. A walk around our building puts

me in bed for a day, sometimes I do it anyway. Be thankful that you can

exercise. This is only meant for inspiration, not self pity, if it does not

help, forget it, but just thought I'd mention it in case it helped.

Well, in my case - I have been under eating for months. So for the last 3

weeks I have been trying to eat a lot. When dieting, I'll be eating

soy/veggies/some fruits.

I am working out tomorrow too.

Forget (what can you expect of someone with

his... antigens). Who needs the others? Just us O's

should be enough. I'm on it today. I had a good long

walk on Saturday. Today I think I'll start in on the

anaerobic weight training. Good to ease in on this sort

of thing. I've noticed the Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness

of an untrained muscle to be easily avoided if you just

go into weight training easily. One or two sets at most

per body part/region. Not too high on the reps. Lower

weight. Just wake those muscles up, get them prepared.

AFter the muscle is conditioned and is once more

accustomed to real contraction then I would go for

the " no pain no gain " attitude. Also, very very good to

warm up before doing anything serious with your bod. I

like walking for 5-10 minutes followed by a light jog.

Or maybe a few bouts of hard running if I've taken a

half-serving of Kaizen's discontinued " Vibe " , a workout

drink containing green tea extract, ma huang (heart

bursting goodness!!!), guarana (caffeine) and siberian

ginseng all in a base of whey protein (hiss!) and

assorted bovine immune and growth substances (with maybe

the incidental inclusion of growth hormones and

lactation booster residues in the sad cows). If I grow

udders on my chest and start lactating green tea

extract/ma huang/siberian ginseng/guarana seed extract

I'll let you know!

I'm done trying to gain winter weight. I can't stand it

anymore. The only way I could put on the " softness " all

over my body (and a very pathetic softness it is) was to

eat some candy with corn syrup, corn being an insulin

screwer-upper. <sigh> I give up. I guess avoids fail

even when it comes to getting fat for the greyhound

types. But my mind is screwed up!!! Whoopee! I'm gonna

try the seaweed regimen and Deflect while drinking the

occasional post-workout recovery whey drink. See how

that goes.

Hi Axel,

In all of your writing about winter weight I have not seen you mention root

crops or fruit. These are the things I was told to ease up on for weight

loss. How about carrots, sweet potatoes, onions, the recently mentioned

turnips and rutabagas? I guess one of the few blessings of being O-ns is

that there are more beneficial fruits, but I think bananas and pears are

still okay for you. Treat yourself to some fruit smoothies, made with

pineapple juice.

Dear Michele, Yours certainly is a message of inspiration - I also am so in

awe of a woman that I see at the Y who is a Thalidomide victim and has

practiacally no limbs but she goes several times a week and swims on her

back for an hour or more. Incredible.

Now I know that you cannot exercise - that must be very frustration. All us

able - bodied lazy ones should remember thta we are lucky to be able to do

it! And take enjoyment from it! All the best for your recovery, Ann

Back in 1997, when I was training for the marathon, one of the most

inspirational stories I read was about an individual that

'ran' a marathon on crutches. It took him about 24 hours, but he completed it.

They kept the course open and brought him

food and water and had security with him the whole 26.2 miles. I remember

thinking, " If he can do it on crutches, certainly I

can do it with my healthy legs. " Never again did I complain about the soreness

in my legs from running! I'm certain that

many people would happily trade places.

You are a hoot! Glad you have the right antigens for the task ahead. Now i don't

feel badly about not having any real soreness after last thursdays workout! Off

to the y today for a warmup, then the machines (low level program for 2 weeks)

and then to swim - will try for 30 minutes - good endorphin raiser! Then the hot

tub with all that terrible chlorine in it. have a good workout - whatever it may

be! Ann

Under the bridge where the bats are (I think it is under 1st.) Chi Gong (like

Tai Chi) deals with recollecting energy to balance the chakra system. If not

interested, I some times walk afterwards (8:30AM). You might want to e-mail me
