U.S. Doctors Say Children Can Start Swim Lessons Earlier

Washington, D.C., DC, United States (AHN) - The American Academy of Pediatrics

is changing its stance on when children should begin swimming lessons, and is

now saying parents should decide based on their children's exposure to the

water.

The academy had advised against swimming lessons for children ages 1 to 3

because there was a lack of evidence suggesting they prevented drowning. Doctors

were also worried parents would have too much confidence in their children's

swimming skills and watch them less around pools. But there is new evidence

that suggests children ages 1 to 4 may be less likely to drown if they have had

formal swimming instruction...
