U.N. chief warns of increasing HIV infections

New cases outpacing gains from treating those already infected

UNITED NATIONS - Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is warning on World AIDS Day that

new infections are outpacing the gains from treating HIV sufferers.

While the world is seeing signs of progress in reversing the AIDS epidemic, Ban

said more must be done to reach the U.N. goal of providing universal access to

HIV prevention, treatment, care and support by 2010.

He said in a statement Tuesday that this can only be done by countering the

stigma and discrimination against HIV and AIDS sufferers.

The U.N. chief urged all countries to remove punitive laws, policies and

practices that hamper the response to AIDS, including travel restrictions

against people living with HIV or AIDS.
