Guest guest Posted February 26, 2006 Report Share Posted February 26, 2006 Saturday February 25, 5:12 PM Indonesia confirms 20th human bird flu death (Kyodo) _ A World Health Organization reference laboratory in Atlanta has confirmed the 20th human bird flu death in Indonesia, an Indonesian senior health official said Saturday. Hariadi Wibisono, director of animal-related diseases control at the Health Ministry, told Kyodo News that the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed that a 27-year-old woman who died Monday tested positive for the virulent H5N1 strain of bird flu. The latest case brings the official number of human cases in the country to 28, including 20 fatalities. Indonesia launched on Friday a door-to-door check on poultry in the capital Jakarta, one of the areas with the highest fatality rates. The H5N1 virus has killed at least 93 people since late 2003 in seven countries -- Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Iraq, Thailand, Vietnam and Turkey, according to the WHO.
