Indonesia confirms 20th human bird flu death

(Kyodo) _ A World Health Organization reference laboratory in Atlanta

has confirmed the 20th human bird flu death in Indonesia, an

Indonesian senior health official said Saturday.

Hariadi Wibisono, director of animal-related diseases control at the

Health Ministry, told Kyodo News that the U.S. Centers for Disease

Control and Prevention confirmed that a 27-year-old woman who died

Monday tested positive for the virulent H5N1 strain of bird flu.

The latest case brings the official number of human cases in the

country to 28, including 20 fatalities.

Indonesia launched on Friday a door-to-door check on poultry in the

capital Jakarta, one of the areas with the highest fatality rates.

The H5N1 virus has killed at least 93 people since late 2003 in seven

countries -- Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Iraq, Thailand, Vietnam and

Turkey, according to the WHO. Saturday February 25, 5:12 PM
