That might entail closing schools, large meetings or otherwise separating the afflicted from the rest of the community. But she added: "I don't think any of us are thinking about those kinds of Draconian measures to really completely quarantine a community or even quarantine a country."...

I'm reading "the great influenza" and it seems that quarantine didn't work,

_unless_ it was Dracononian.

I've seen others in forums arguing that this quarantine were just only brought

up to calm down people and give them a false feeling that something is being done.

A mild pandemic -though more likely- isn't really something to worry about

compared to a 1918-like-one. So, why don't they even _think_ of any Draconian

measures ? Is it just that they are afraid to disturb people ?

This in itself is rather disturbing...

I'd be interested waht "fast progress" means exactly. I.e. how much

did that progress reduce the probability of the average citizen to

die from H5N1 in the next 5 years ?

Hmm, I'll ask Gerberding in email...

there is this EpiCast simulation program, I think there was a link or an article recently.

They ran it for smallpox etc. already and now for panflu.

But I'm not sure, it wasn't mentioned : are there no results yet, or are these being

kept secret ?? Why didn't Gerberding mention these ?

It all looks good on paper. This does not inspire hope in me. Lee <jackalope_lepus@...> wrote: U.S. Says It's Making Progress on Bird Flu By HOPE YEN, Associated Press Writer WASHINGTON - The U.S. is making fast progress in preparations for a bird flu pandemic, including measures to close down schools and quarantine the sick, but vaccine supplies remain inadequate, health officials said Sunday. "We've got a lot of work to do," said Gerberding, director of the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, citing "bottlenecks" in vaccine production and the delivery of health care if there's an outbreak. "We've got to get more and better anti-viral drugs. And we've got to have every single link in our public health system as strong as it can be so it can

detect this problem," she said on CBS' "Face the Nation."A strain of a bird flu that has killed more than 70 people in Asia since it first appeared two years ago has sparked concerns of a super-flu that could kill millions worldwide. Almost all the victims were in close contact with poultry. While stressing that chances remain slight, health experts have said it could lead to a global pandemic if the bird flu mutates to start spreading easily among people. The U.S., which has not seen any signs of the strain in birds or people, has only enough doses now for 4.3 million people.Gerberding said some immediate measures to combat the flu in the U.S. and worldwide would include isolating the sick and their immediate contacts. That might entail closing schools, large meetings or otherwise separating the afflicted from the rest of the community. But she added: "I don't think any of us are thinking about those kinds of

The government's concern is not to alarm people, thus avoiding panic. In order to do this there's always the stuff about "we're making progress", "plans are in place". It's just a bit of deceit. Instead of the government issuing draconian measures and hoodwinking the people with idle words, it would be far better for the government to come forward with useful information about how to control the spread of infections and what to do should you get sick. That would be progress.sterten@... wrote: In einer eMail vom 02.01.2006 04:49:30 Westeuropäische Normalzeit schreibt jackalope_lepus@...: That might entail closing schools, large meetings or otherwise separating the afflicted from the rest of the community. But she added: "I don't think any of us are thinking about those kinds of Draconian measures to really completely quarantine a community or even quarantine a country."... -------------------- I'm reading "the great influenza" and it seems that quarantine didn't work, _unless_ it was Dracononian. In government language, which bears a vaguely superficial resemblance to the everyday language of ordinary people, "fast progress" means something like "within this lifetime". Of course, that depends upon the age of the speaker. The whole world saw how "fast" our government moved when New Orleans got flooded. sterten@... wrote: I'd be interested waht "fast progress" means exactly.
