I would guess that most epidimiologists would say the same thing: It woud be something that could become far, far worse than 1918. On the other hand, it could end up like SARS - pretty much a disease that belongs in the " where are they now file " . There was great worry over SARS, and today it is almost forgotten. Hopefully the Avian Flu will be like that. Perhaps with great effort, swift action, and every technological resource it will be. But when top U.S. government officals are speaking in these terms one has to wonder where this is headed. Pretty much every government in the world is (or HAS) drafted a strategic plan to deal with the problem, spending millions or even billions. At the moment I would say that this thing could go either way. But there will come day when even the most optimistic among us will have to start thinking about how we will prepare for a potential global catastrophe.
