Guest guest
I wonder why Sally said to stir it in water. That seems wierd. Hmm. If taking it on an empty stomach doesn't help burping, I don't know what to say to that, but as to the taste, I certainly must suggest Carlson's lemon-flavor cod liver oil. It tastes *good*. I personally don't mind the taste of cod liver oil at all so it isn't an issue for me, but this tastes nothing like CLO and even my girlfriend who HATES the taste of CLO, likes it. I also don't notice a cod liver oil smell or taste in my breath at all when I use it. Chris ____ " What can one say of a soul, of a heart, filled with compassion? Guest guest
BTW, you should probably also consider the possibility that you as an individual just can't tolerate cod liver oil. CLO is an especially convenient supplement, but there are other ways to get the nutrients. However, some of those ways might be harder to eat like raw liver ;-). Guest guest
Which brand are you taking? I have heard(although I haven't tried yet) that Nordic Naturals is the best for not giving " the burps " or having a funky taste. Hi all, Recently talked to Sally Fallon and she tells me she takes 2 TABLESPOONS of cod liver oil every day, stirred into a glass of water. I sooooo dread taking it and I have only been taking a teaspoon per day. I upped it to one tablespoon after talking to her, but I take it in the morning and then burp horrible cod liver oil burps until lunchtime. It's hard enough to get down in the first place, and I just can't stand tasting it again all morning. At Radiant Life's suggestion I take it on an empty stomach just before eating breakfast. Hasn't really helped. They also had suggested the liquid rather than capsules, but I feel like that hasn't helping the burping either, and then I have to taste it going down too! (I mix it with X-Factor butter oil and chase it with kombucha, but nothing can REALLY hide that taste.) Any suggestions? Jill -- Mind & Media, Inc. Guest guest
BTW, you should probably also consider the possibility that you as an individual just can't tolerate cod liver oil. I have heard this before, not everyone can tolerate cod liver oil. Do you have any other information on this? I personally do not like the fact that cod is overfished and is a fish with high mercury content, not an animal from the purest parts of the ocean. My sister and I also burp up the cod liver oil so we quit taking it. I have been interested in finding out what else we can do. Also in my attempt to eat more locally, well cod is not fished in the central US. We live near no ocean here... I would so much prefer to get as much food as possible from right here. I already preserve most of our food and spend very little at the grocery store. a
Guest guest
Hi Jill, Were you burping the CLO when you were taking only 1 teaspoon? If so, maybe the switch to 1T was too much too fast -- just a guess. I don't burp the CLO, so can't help much w/it. As for the taste, I buy Premier Brand from Radiant Life (having heard someone say it barely tasted like CLO). Well, I couldn't stand it and thought, " There's no way I can do this. " Since I've got health problems, I'm pretty much willing to try anything, so that was a strong reaction for me. Someone here suggested drops of lemon extract, so I used to do that stirred together w/a small amount of water. Then I realized that the CLO floats on top of the water, so I started using about 4 oz water and pouring my 1/2t of CLO on top, *not* stir, drink slowly, watching the CLO approach the edge of the glass. When it got close, I'd take one final big gulp and would barely taste it! It was so much easier not dispersed through the water. After about 2 months, one morning I mistakenly poured my 1/2t of CLO and took it straight (I was sleepy). It was a shock, but then I realized that it wasn't too bad. Now I take it straight from the teaspoon every morning. (Of course, I'm still only taking 1/2t). I honestly would have never thought I could ever take it straight, but I've learned that my tastes buds adjust to things, even if it is slowly. That's my experience. Guest guest
I take my cod liver oil right out of the measuring spoon and just swallow it. If you need a chaser I think anything acidic would work better than water (though h20 is fine if it works obvoiusly.) Jen suggested ACV. For a more pleasant taste, while I don't recommend drinking orange juice every day, it would probably be the best tasting chaser and acidic enough to wash the taste right out of your mouth. My boss and I are making a " convert " out of another co-worker and she tried CLO, at the suggestion of my boss I think tried putting it *in* some orange juice, but she put it in a big glass and found the entire glass impossible to get down. That is NOT the way to do it! LOL! I don't know why she didn't just take it straight and *chase* it with that big ol' slug of OJ. Guest guest
Jill this is also a pretty good diagnostic for lousy digestion meaning you're likely not producing enough stomach acid. Just an FYI. The empty stomach thing needs to be truly an empty stomach and your stomach needs to STAY empty for a minimum of an hour. This is not true for everyone but this will likely solve your personal problem. Someone told me to do this or I read it somewhere and it's never been a problem for me. I'm one of the few that likes the taste.
Guest guest
Hi Jill, I had the same problem burping CLO....not pleasant!....in an attempt to make it taste better for my toddler, I bought some lemon oil from Kitchen Kaboodle, put it in a dropper bottle, and put 2-3 drops on top of clo in a shot glass...he liked it! I tried it that way myself and amazingly I NEVER burp clo taste! I also tried mixing some of the lemon oil in the clo bottle (trying to save a step in the AM) and it doesn't work! I also bought orange and lime oil...they all work great. I would like to find and organic source though...if anybody knows of one! The brand is BOYAJIAN. Web site on the bottle is: www.boyajianinc.com The company is based in Norwood, MA. Guest guest
Any high-quality cod liver oil is mercury- and PCB-free. Shark liver oil, search archives for link, and other liver oils like halibut. Omega-3s can be gotten from fatty fish like salmon. Vitamin D can be gotten from raw grass-fed milk, shellfish, pastured lard, liver (raw?), grass-fed eggs. Vitamin A can be gotten from liver. If you don't have one of the multitude of problems that inhibits vit. A conversion from carotenes palm butter is also a good source. Cod liver oil is just much more convenient than micromanaging your diet. Guest guest
I've got the same issue with Cod Liver Oil, and I've been burping for a few hours after eating fish too. Salmon and Perch this week. Should i try to improve my production of stomach acid? Guest guest
I vote for the lemon-flavored Carlson's version. I started taking it last Friday. It really *does* taste good! I think it even tastes better than some wheat germ oil that I had not long ago. I also take it right from the measuring spoon.
