Pools at foreclosed homes raise West Nile threat in Dallas County

As if joblessness and the down stock market weren't enough, the weak economy has

led to another problem: mosquitoes.

A growing collection of vacant homes in foreclosure, coupled with a wet spring,

has fueled a mosquito resurgence in the region, Dallas County health officials

say.

Empty homes with unkempt swimming pools have been especially to blame.

" We're getting a lot of calls on vacant homes that are foreclosed on and have

swimming pools that, basically, are breeding grounds for mosquitoes, " said

Zachary , director of Dallas County health and human services...

Water crystals used to stop mosquito breeding in vases

This Memorial Day weekend, many will visit local cemeteries to honor veterans

and loved ones that have passed away and it could prove dangerous, according to

the Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District.

Since mosquitoes can breed in the stagnant water collected in cemetery vases,

officials have been working with local cemeteries to fill the vases with water

crystals that turn the water into a gel preventing mosquitoes from laying their

eggs and keeping the flowers fresh...
