Guest guest
Actually low-fat has been around since the 50s. If you go back to Atkins first Diet Revolution book (still in print - pretty good for a fad diet) published in the early 1070s you will find that he talks against the low-fat diet. In fact that's why he wrote his book. One of the first, if not the first, studies that " proved " that fat was bad for you was the Anti Coronary Club that ran from the mid 50s to the early 60s. The test group ate margarine, cold cereals, etc. The control group ate a normal diet of red meat, butter, eggs, etc. The study was called a rousing success because it lowered cholesterol a few points. But there were eight deaths from heart disease in the test group and no deaths from heart disease in the study group. It really makes me question the mentality and the sanity of the people running the study when the lowering of cholesterol was more important than preventing heart attacks. Enjoy! ;-) Judith Alta -----Original Message----- --- In , " Judith Alta " <jaltak@v...> wrote: > In her first book she made it very plain that no one was ever to be in > ketosis. She doesn't really talk about ketosis in her new book, she talks about extreme LC in relation to hormones, not ketosis, this time > > As always, one must read all they can find an make their own decision as to > what works best for them. > Absolutely, although I thought I'd never be able to eat so many carbs and i have added around 40-50g per day extra with no weight gain!!! Now that i disagree with ;-) Atkins has been around for 30 years, and low fat has only been around since the 80s. Even Weight Watchers in the 70s was low carb (so my mum tells me!) So anyone who calls LC a fad is wrong <beg> Jo

During the " Quick Start " week, you could have 2 servings of bread/starch. As the program went on, you could have up to 3 servings of bread/starch, but no more (for women). I suspect that some eating plans in the 1960s were also low carb. This isn't a scientific reference, but get hold of the original " Lady and the Tramp " movie from Disney. I have a copy that is so old it has no commercials! There is a scene where Tramp is trotting into town, looking for breakfast. The first restaurant he considers is the French bakery. He shakes his head and says, " Nope. Too much... <page down while you try to remember> <keep going> .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... ....STARCH! " (Did you think he was going to say " Too much fat " ? I did, when I saw it again in the late 1990s!) See? Even in popular culture, they knew that too much starch was not good for you!!
