Robin,

A quick search turned up:

Like mannitol, sorbitol, and other sugar alcohols, maltitol may be expected

to promote flatulence and other gastrointestinal symptoms.

On this website:

....and..this from Europe...

In the case of maltitol syrup, a new type of syrup, which contains a broader

range of high molecular weight hydrogenated polysaccharides, has recently

been considered acceptable for use in food.....

Looks like it might be one of the better artificial sweetners??

Of course there are lots of positive things said, by the people selling it.

;-)
