Since I have a horrid problem with tooth decay, I've been rinsing my mouth

out with baking soda from time to time, to encourage an alkaline environment

in my mouth. It makes my mouth feel lots fresher than toothpaste ever could!

I wonder if rinsing with whey is a good idea? To lactobacilli take up home

in the mouth?

Hi, I am new to the group. I have used Myhrr to brush my teeth just put some

powder on muy hand and dip my wet tooth brush in it, I have also used powdered

charcoal that is a little messier but like both how my mouth feels clean.

I would like to make some of my own toothpaste, because I find Weleda

very costly. You can by a pound of calcium carbonate at a drug store

for about $15.00. This is a stadard component of most toothpastes. It

usually must be ordered. Imagine how much toothpaste could be made

with that quanity of mild abrasive. I think I will try the baking

soda first. It is not very costly either, maybe even cheaper if you

buy a huge box at Costco.

They have fluoride and non-fluoride. I've been using Tom's, but they do use

a few crappy ingredients here and there, like sodium lauryl sulfate, at least

according the article that was just posted in this thread. Since I read

that, I tried brushing with a lump of baking soda and drop of tea tree oil,

and I think I'm just going to do that from now on b/c it makes my mouth feel

Hi,

Sorry about that last blank message. I take flower essences for spiritual

support and for this reason like a homeopathic non-mint toothpaste. My vote

is for Tom's - yes expensive but they have an excellent product and are an

environmentally conscious company. I'm sure most people have heard of them

but I wanted to mention their homeopathic style baking soda toothpaste. It's

plain - not bad tasting. If anyone else on this list takes homeopathics or

flower essences I'd highly recommend investing in this kind of toothpaste

because it makes the remedies much more effective.

Cheers,

Our local health food store has Tom's toothpaste and I've noticed that you

have to read the labels as some have fluoride.

I used to brush with baking powder, but putting hydrogen peroxide with it

made me nauseous. I stopped doing it when they started making toothpaste

with baking powder because it was less of a mess in the bathroom. Maybe I

should go back. It's very easy to use baking powder alone. It's like using

European tooth powder. Thinking back, maybe it did cut down on cavities. I

just never connected the two.

I've read the claim about how SLS is an irritant countless times, but

I have yet to be irritated by any product containing it. Aubrey from

Aubrey Organics makes a big fuss about how SLS is manufactured using

strong acid, but his own " natural " shampoo is based on coconut oil

soap, which is made with a strong alkalai, and his shampoo burns my

eyes and turns my hair to straw.

You'll often see cites of the MSDS sheet for SLS, but they never take

into account that the SLS in products is diluted. Look at the MSDS

sheet for glacial acetic acid; it's nasty stuff ( " This material is

strongly corrosive and causes serious burns " ). But, that doesn't mean

the vinegar in your salad dressing is going to cause serious burns in

your GI tract. Personally, I take the warnings about SLS as seriously

as the claim that canola oil is what they made mustard gas out of in

WWII.

make sure to dilute the tea tree well (you can pre mix 1 Tablespoon of

baking soda with 1 drop of tea tree). Tea tree oil is a powerful sensitizer

(you can become allergic to it over time). As with ALL essential oils--DILUTE

DILUTE DILUTE.

Just my 2 cents,

Regarding sodium lauryl sulfate: I worked in a molecular biology lab for

many years, and this is what the industry uses to bust apart cells. The

membranes just vanish (and then you can isolate the DNA). I don't doubt

that the presence of SLS doesn't irritate many, but I wouldn't knowingly

consume any amount of the stuff.

I cringe when I watch my husband swallow the stuff if he brushes his teeth

(with HIS toothpaste containing SLS and fluoride) where there isn't a sink

or a polite place to spit. But he is far healthier than I, so I'm not

trying to save him yet.

Isn't sodium lauryl sulfate made from coconuts? One of the ways coconut oil

works against viruses is by dissolving the envelope on " enveloped viruses. "

So it does not surprise me that this would happen in a lab.

Don't remember where I read that, but Enig may have some articles on

it. If anyone is interested I can see if I can find them again.
