Guest guest
I have to say that had I not been allowed to ride a bike as a child growing up with CMT I would have been even more left out by the other neighborhood kids. I rode my bike every day and sometimes for a few miles into town to visit friends up until I was 15 and bought a moped. I loved the moped but found that during that summer notriding my bike and getting the exercise my leg strength deteriorated a great deal. Looking back, getting the moped and giving up the bike was the worst thing I could have done for my health. Our neighborhood was safe and although I remember taking a tumble trying to ride my bike down the neighbor's hill and hitting the ditch at the bottom I can't t say I had any accidents that were CMT related and out of the ordinary for kids growing up. Kids are going to fall and hurt themselves every now and then, CMT or not,but I can honestly say if my parents had refused to allow me to ride a bike due to my CMT I would have been very resentful and been made to feel even more alienated than I did at times. Guest guest
that is so similar to my experience as a kid. Before I got my drivers license I rode my bike all over the neighborhood. It was my ticket to freedom. After I turned 16, the bike started to gather dust. My legs begun to get a little worse without the exercise. I know now I should have keep it up. I was wearing braces but the bike riding sure did seem to help. I was wondering what kind of braces do most of the members wear. I have had problems with plastic braces and am now very happy with my metal ones. So many of the orthotists today only want to fit their patients in plastic braces that they forget the advantages to metal braces. Just wondering. Guest guest
Hi. I rode my bike as a kid all the time as well. It was the one thing athletic that I could tolerate well. At 47 I still ride as much as I can. The only problem I have now is I lose my grip holding the handlebars or my hands cramp up. So I cant ride as much as I used to. My legs hold out well, however sometimes my feet slide off the peddles because of my feet turn outwards. Just like the way I walk on the outside of my feet. I peddle the same way. I try to concentrate on keeping my feet straight. Carol
