Guest guest
Oh , All I can say is grrrrr....to the report you gave about your fitness center. And BS to the " grandfathered in " idea. These links may help you with useful information. The Dept. of Justice one has a toll free phone number, and they might be able to give you suggestions on how to file a complaint. I have called them in the past and they are very helpful. http://www.usdoj.gov/crt/ada/adahom1.htm http://www.access-board.gov/adaag/html/adaag.htm Another idea I have for you if you want to pursue this, and I mean, WHY NOT? Contact members of Congress who represent your State in Wash. D.C. and see if you can get someone to lean on the fitness center. Here is a link to find out who to contact http://www.visi.com/juan/congress/ And the 3rd idea I have is to contact your State Assembly persons - hey, contact the Governor's office. I can't remember exactly where you are, but just type in your search engine your governor's name and/or your State (spell out) government. Under the ADA those of us who need access are guaranteed it. Now, it appears your fitness center is trying to get out of what they need to do - perhaps thinking " no disabled people come here " or " why would disabled people come here " - ahem, again, not exactly 21st century thinking.... in many ways disabled people are still at " the back of the bus " . Remember, this isn't 1963, it's 2003! I don't know if the ADA has people that actually do inspections of buildings or not. Good question to ask if you call the toll free phone number. It is such a shame you couldn't use that pool - wonder how many others with other disabilities would use it IF it was accessible. Hope this helps some. ~ Gretchen
