The Global Campaign for Microbicides (GCM) has a secretariat based at PATH in Washington, DC, and offices in Ottawa, Canada; Brussels, Belgium; New Delhi, India; Nairobi, Kenya; and Johannesburg, South Africa. We support the work of partner groups around the world by providing information, materials, skills-building and organizing tools to strengthen the engagement of civil society in the microbicides research and development process. Our work is organized in four areas: capacity building and social mobilization; science policy and ethics; creating an enabling environment for trials; and planning operations and special projects. GCM is seeking a dynamic, committed, visionary and strategic thinker to lead GCM through its next phase of development. The Director will have overall responsibility for the strategic, programmatic, financial and managerial operations of GCM. In consultation with GCM's international steering committee and staff, s/he will implement GCM's strategic plan, design effective activities and enhance the organization's ability to achieve its unique mission. The Director reports to the Vice President for External Relations at PATH. Responsibilities include: Maintain GCM's visibility and focus for impact in a rapidly changing field. Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in the field and make adjustments to GCM's strategy, positioning and work plan as needed, to achieve its goals in an evolving scientific, political, and organizational environment. Represent GCM at high-level speaking engagements and meetings to increase visibility and communicate its vision. Sustain momentum, optimism and support for microbicides and other woman-initiated methods among a range of stakeholders including donors, policymakers, trial sponsors, and community advocates. Strengthen operational and technical integration of GCM's African, Asian, European and North American staff and offices. Build, retain, and nurture respectful, positive and productive relationships with key organizational partners, leaders and allies. Make strategic choices about collaboration and/or partnerships with civil society, research entities, government and donors. Develop and supervise a skilled global senior management team to ensure that GCM activities are effectively conceived, planned, managed, and reported. Encourage staff development and continual learning; attract, keep, and motivate a diverse top quality staff. Strengthen engagement of GCM's international Steering Committee, ensuring its well-informed involvement in key strategic questions. Expand and diversify GCM's funding base; strengthening relationships with current donors and cultivating new sources of funding for both GCM and other advocacy groups in the microbicides field. Ensure financial sustainability and accountability to funders and mission. Required Skills The ideal candidate will be a confident manager, spokesperson, bridge-builder, and possess a deep understanding of women's health, HIV/AIDS, human rights, international development, biomedical research and/or ethics. S/he will demonstrate: The ability to make decisions, implement and make adjustments to strategy, and provide clear direction in a quickly evolving field The ability to learn quickly about new prevention technologies and interact credibly and comfortably with scientists. The ability to manage high quality projects within budget and time constraints, in situations where collaboration with other organizations is critical to success. Excellence in developing, managing, and supervising professional staff and collaborating with a steering committee, board of directors, or advisory board. The ability to develop and maintain donor relationships, write successful proposals, and seek out new sources of funding. Strong financial skills. Fluency in English with knowledge of at least one additional language relevant to working in a developing country preferred. Excellent negotiation skills, political judgment, and diplomacy skills. Willingness to travel internationally and domestically up to 35% annually. Required Experience Advanced degree in public health, international development, or relevant field plus at least 15 years of relevant work experience, including building and executing programs in the area of women's health, HIV/AIDS, human rights, international development, biomedical research and/or ethics, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. At least five years of experience working in, or with, organizations in the Global South. At least 10 years of senior leadership experience. Job Location Washington, DC, US.
