Hi ka,

You might consider this article about CMT1A in your

search about CIDP.

" Subject: CMT 1A pathology

article from Archives of Pathology and Laboratory

Medicine: Vol. 127, No. 6, pp. e273–e274.

2003 June Pathologic Quiz Case: A Child With Clumsy

Gait

Mohammad A. Al-Muhaizea, MD,a and A. Prayson,

MDa From the Departments of Pediatric Neurology (Dr

Al-Muhaizea) and Anatomic Pathology (Dr Prayson),

Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Cleveland, Ohio.

The stuff in the [] is mine, I was interpretting it

with an on-line medical dictionary.

While I doubt that you have 1A (it would be easier to

diagnose as it's the most common form of CMT and DNA

testing for it is pretty reliable), the article did

mention CIDP here with a footnote to another reference

on CIDP.

" The differential diagnosis also includes chronic

inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathies [CIDP]

[similar to the demyelination of CMT, but often

involves weakness of the upper legs with some level of

abnormal sensation, but not pain, and cerebral spinal

fluid reveals elevated protein levels; condition often

improves with steroid treatment], which have a

characteristic relapsing and remitting course

[symptoms come and go], easily differentiated from CMT

by electromyography and the inflammatory changes on

the biopsy specimen.9 "

The footnote reference is

" 9. Mc, CM. Peripheral neuropathies of

childhood. Phys Med Rehab Clin North Am

2001;12:473–490. "

It seems to me there is some easily identifiable

difference in the EMG results, although I don't know

specifically what this article is referring to in

regard to the " easily differentiated from CMT by

[EMG]... " You might want to read up on EMG results

and the characteristics of CMT and CIDP.

Good luck and don't give up--I'm always teaching my

drs new things about CMT! I have 1A, so it's easier

for me knowing what I have.

Enjoy the remainder of summer!
