There have been times in my life I have been vitamin B6 and B12

deficient. It was necessary for me to have injections and maintain

vitamin therapy so this would not happen again. I had no adverse or ill

effects from this in relation to my CMT or anything else.

We need to be careful with vitamins and medications; it seems we are all

aware of the lists. In addition, I keep in regular check with my doctor

first regarding my general overall health and use of vitamins. My Los

Angeles internist started me on 1000 I.U. of Vitamin E about 8 or 9

years ago and when I moved here, my internist learned something new -

the theraputic affects of E for me - blood flow to muscles, plus the

care of skeletal muscle tissue, so with my first internist's protocol, I

continue to follow this. The article below is very old - from 1986, but

about Vitamin E and CMT.

I hope everyone keeps in contact with their internist on their vitamin

and dietary needs. What I found disturbing about the Vitamin B article

posted is that it did not mention CMT. Certainly, too much of anything

is not recommended. So, I just urge everyone to talk to their doc about

their specific dietary/vitamin needs. If we continue to share our

personal experience in regards to CMT, we will continue to learn much. ~

Abstract from Neurology. 1986 Sep;36(9):1200-5.

Dietary essential fatty acids, vitamin E, and Charcot-Marie-Tooth

disease.

LL, O'Dougherty MM, FS, Bobulski RJ, Horrocks LA.

Twenty patients with type I Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease received dietary

supplementation with the essential fatty acids (EFA), linoleic and

gamma-linolenic acids, and vitamin E. A 3-month blinded trial of placebo

(paraffin oil and vitamin E, 81.6 IU/d) was followed by 1 year of 3

grams daily of EFA and vitamin E. Serum fatty acid values doubled, but

total esterified fatty acid proportions did not change.

Arachidonic acid proportions correlated with the amount of

prostaglandin-mediated lymphocyte suppression measured at the same

times. Improvement demonstrated at the end of the placebo period by

neuropsychological tests and neurologic examination was maintained

during the 1 year of EFA supplementation. This effect may reflect a

membrane stabilization benefit of vitamin E.
