ATC/DDD what we learnt at WHO TBS

Hello All, Attending Technical Briefing Seminar at Geneva was a dream coming true, for a person like me who has not traveled much within the country, leave aside going out of the country. I was therefore apprehensive about what the seminar would be like. However, I had the company of Vijay who has not only traveled the world over but was also a second timer at TBS Geneva. The seminar is conducted every year by WHO to give an overview to the participants of the various programs being conducted by WHO. This helps WHO since the participants carry home the message and in their own way influence the activities of their own country in sync with the WHO guidelines. The theme of the TBS this year was “Quality assurance and safety of medicines- global perspective”. An insight into the various strategies formulated to ensure quality of medicines was provided through several presentations daily from 9AM to 5.30 PM. I t was exhaustive material and we were able to take back positive messages which could be conveyed to the policy makers through different fora. NetRUM being one such forum where the knowledge gained can be quickly and widely disseminated, I am posting here whatever I learnt there. This will not be a routine exercise as we have done earlier but would be more of the classroom type interaction,

but my postings would definitely invite views from all the members, as to what can be done to improve drug utilization in general, in our settings. Recognition of a medicine by a common name world wide was the first objective. Any prescription written anywhere in the world should ideally be dispensed the same medicine across all countries. For this objective to be achieved, WHO has come up with international non proprietary names INN, international Pharmacopoeia, international pharmacopoeia (Ph.Int.), ATC classification of medicines and Disease classification. For safety and quality assurance we were informed about the GMP

certification program, GCP, GLP, GDP guidelines, prequalification status, and pharmacovigilance activities. We will discuss ATC /DDD classification in my postings and hopefully another topic from the TBS,would be covered by Vijay some time later. kunda

Hi,

Great start by a seasoned teacher. Kunda is attempting a new approach

to E-discussion. The novelty with purpose and experimentation with

dedication is sure to be a grant success.

I am sure that those who read her material will be certainly

motivated to apply for next TBS at WHO HQ Geneva. Thanks for the kind

words Kunda. WHO willing, I will try for a hatrick in 2008! So those

who wish to be in my company at Geneva, rev up. Happy New Year.
