Hip dysplasia occurs when the femur doesn't sit in the hip

correctly. My 7 year-old daughter just had surgery in May for hip

dysplasia (both sides). Prior to the surgery, she was in so much

pain that she couldn't walk more than 10 minutes at a time without

taking a break. Essentially, the femur was rubbing on the hip- the

doctor said that left untreated, she would have eventually worn her

hip down so much that she'd never be able to walk again (since there

wouldn't be anything keeping her legs from dislocating).

The surgery required the doctor to break both her femurs and set them

at a sharper angle. They are now connected by a 6 inch metal plate.

We're just keeping our fingers crossed that everything works well and

she is pain free.
