Guest guest
Dear members, Increased side effects, lack of curative treatment for several chronic diseases, high cost of new drugs, microbial resistance and emerging diseases are some reasons for renewed public interest in complementary and alternative medicines. Beside that we have nearly 6000 years of anecdotal evidence supporting the use and effectiveness of herbal medicines. In recent times, there has been isolated reporting of adverse drug reactions appearing in medical journals and newspapers caused by taking these medicines. However the main focus is just on the safety and not the efficacy when it comes to Ayurvedic medicine which raises the suspicion that this could be a systematic, ongoing campaign to malign Ayurvedic medicines especially, those containing metals and minerals to check its unprecedented growth in western countries. Also as stated by Prof. Dr. S. S.Savrikar, ADRs to Ayurvedic medicines may be due to use of spurius and misbranded ayurvedic medicines, or non adherence to strict GMP guidelines.
