Regarding free weights; I have CMT and have worked out for

the past 26 years in every conceivable way. To make a long

story short, the best combination of exercises for me has been

swimming and free weights (a few weight machines too). The

temptation, for men at least, is to lift much heavier than

necessary for good fitness. The problem, of course, is that you

become too fatigued. I have been very successful using light

weights and doing lots of repetitions. You have to experiment

to figure out what is best for you. I may do 20-50 reps with a

light weight, focusing on proper lifting technique vs. lifting

the heaviest weight possible for 10-12 reps focusing on

" exhaustion " . I don't " burn " the muscle like body builders do.

Rather, I focus on feeling the muscle tightening and become

firm--then stop, stretch and rest. When I can do this on a

regular basis (swim and lift on alternate days), I feel

terrific and my energy remains high. Good luck with your exercises.

Tom
